The Switch Axe is one of the 14 weapons getting reworked by the Boost Bracer in Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, and the changes land squarely on its two gauges. Capcom’s Boosted Action breakdown for the weapon shows a new class of attack that fills resources instantly, a dash-in Zero Sum Discharge, an aerial finisher, and a counter that flows straight into a combo.
Quick answer: Boost Drivers fill the Switch and Amp Gauge and turn on Boost. While boosted, the Switch Axe gains a rocket-dash Zero Sum Discharge, an aerial follow-up, a counter, and the Boost Bracer offset attack.
What Boost does for the Switch Axe
The Boost Bracer is a new hunting action tied to Master Rank. You build its energy by staying on the offensive, then spend it to enter Boost, a temporary state that upgrades specific moves rather than everything at once. Each weapon gets its own version, and the Switch Axe’s version is built around gauge economy.
Capcom sums up the weapon’s Boosted Actions in three points:
- Blast and build Switch and Amp Gauge.
- Burst forward with element discharge.
- Unleash new combos and follow-ups.
The showcase footage runs a Master Rank Lagiacrus set against a Mizutsune, with the Switch Axe gauge sitting in the corner of the HUD so you can watch it refill on every Boost Driver.

Boost Drivers are the powerful attacks that switch Boost on. They are not a separate transformation you stand still for — the attack itself does damage, fills the gauge, and flips you into the boosted state in one motion.
The important detail for Switch Axe players is that a Boost Driver respects whichever mode you are already in. Use it in Sword Mode and you morph to Axe; use it in Axe Mode and you morph to Sword. Either way you come out the other side with resources restored, so the move doubles as a morph and a refill instead of costing you a slow charge-up.
Because the Boost Driver grants the gauge you need for the mode you are morphing into, it works best as a transition tool when you are about to run dry rather than as an opener at full gauge.
Every boosted Switch Axe move
Boost is temporary, and only certain actions change while it is running. Four of them stand out in the weapon breakdown.
Rocket-dash Zero Sum Discharge
The boosted version of the Zero Sum Discharge no longer needs you to already be glued to the monster. The hunter thrusts forward on a burst of thrust, latches onto the target mid-dash, and then detonates. It closes distance and commits to the full discharge in a single input, which makes it far easier to land ZSD on a monster that keeps repositioning.

Aerial follow-up after the explosion
The explosion at the end of the boosted ZSD launches you upward, and from there you can chain into a downward aerial slash. It reads very closely to the Soaring Wyvern Blade from Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak — you come down blade-first onto the monster instead of simply dropping off it.

New counter move
The Switch Axe also picks up a counter. Time it against an incoming attack — the demonstration uses Mizutsune’s water stream — and a blue flash confirms the read, opening straight into an enhanced combo. It is a defensive option that pays out in damage rather than just buying you space.

Boost Bracer offset attack
The Boost Bracer offset attack is the heaviest-feeling move of the set. On connection the axe digs into the monster and saws through its body with a long hitstop — the same grinding feedback the Charge Blade’s Savage Axe work gives — before the hunter rips free with a wide, uncontrolled swing to finish.
How to confirm Boost is active
Three on-screen cues tell you where you stand. The Switch Axe gauge in the corner jumps after a Boost Driver lands, the weapon morphs to the opposite mode as part of that same attack, and the moves listed above only become available once you are boosted. If the ZSD does not dash forward, you are not in the boosted state.
For the counter specifically, the blue flash on a successful read is the confirmation. Without it, the follow-up combo will not come out.
Release window and platforms
Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is a paid expansion due in 2027, and it requires the Monster Hunter Wilds base game. No exact release date has been confirmed.

Capcom is rolling out a Boosted Action breakdown for each of the 14 weapon types on a daily schedule, and the Switch Axe video is part of that run. If you main the weapon, the takeaway is simple enough: Boost Drivers keep both gauges topped up, and everything flashy the Boost Bracer unlocks is gated behind spending them at the right moment.
