Quick answer: You play as Soul. His closest childhood friend, Zuo Shang, is now the Order’s Shadow Sovereign and his sworn enemy, and after the prologue Soul has sixty-six days left to live.
Who Soul is
Soul is the player character in Phantom Blade Zero, and you control him from the prologue onward.
His past runs through one relationship. Soul and Zuo Shang grew up as the two adopted sons of Sovereign Mu, and the game’s description of Zuo Shang states it plainly: “In his youth, Zuo Shang was Soul’s closest friend and fellow adopted son of Sovereign Mu.” The same text sets the two boys against each other in temperament. Zuo Shang was the steady, measured one, set against “Soul’s impulsiveness and unrestrained nature”.
That friendship is over by the time you take control of the adult Soul. Zuo Shang now holds the title “Zuo Shang, the Order’s Shadow Sovereign,” and his boss description opens with “Once Soul’s closest friend. Now his sworn enemy.”
Soul himself has deep roots in the Order. Old comrades, people he saved, and a childhood friend all turn up later. On the road, though, he keeps it simple. When guards at the Weeping Creek Valley Outpost gate ask who he is, Soul tells them he is a wanderer heading to Pangzhen to see an old friend.

The prologue opens with a sparring match between Soul and the young Zuo Shang. That fight flows straight into a cutscene, and when control returns you are playing the adult Soul.
The adult Soul then duels Zuo Shang, the Order’s Shadow Sovereign, on a wooden platform in the rain. You don’t get a victory screen here. As Zuo Shang’s health bar nears empty, a cutscene takes over and the story decides how the fight ends.

What follows is the choice that defines Soul’s condition, and the game doesn’t let you make it. A hooded figure called the Flesh Sculptor offers him two hearts:
- Hollow Heart: it would restore Soul’s heart, but it would also strip out every emotion and desire and leave him living by reason alone.
- Tainted Heart: its venom would keep his heart beating, but it would kill him in sixty-six days.
There is no button prompt or menu for this. The prologue ends on a close-up of Soul’s eye with the card “DIVERGING PATHS / END OF CHAPTER”.

The story then cuts forward with a “Present Day” caption, and Soul is riding in the back of a horse-drawn cart through the rain.

Soul’s 66-day countdown
A fixed countdown first appears at the start of Chapter 1, “AGAINST THE FLOW” (“Follow the path upstream”). Soul, wearing a straw hat, stands on a jungle trail as “Days Remaining: 66” appears on screen.

Days don’t tick away on a clock. They go when Soul rests. The game’s tutorial spells it out: “Communing with the Crane Bells will trigger a memory of the past, but Soul will rest for the night, permanently reducing your Remaining Days by one.” Your first rest at a Crane Bell drops the counter from 66 to 65. Each Crane Bell memory costs Soul a day.
If the days run out, the ending text reads: “Failed to uncover the truth and find the “Heart” before the end of your sixty-six-day lifespan.”
The time limit also names one of the difficulty modes: 66 DAYS, whose menu text is “66 days only. Every step could be your last.” The mode is greyed out when you start a new game, and PATHBREAKER is the highlighted default.
Sanguine, Soul’s blade
Soul’s own sword is SANGUINE. A WOODEN SANGUINE also exists. At the Weeping Creek Valley Outpost, the smith known as the Forge (one of the Three Sisters) explains that the former Shadow Sovereign chose Sanguine for Soul, and that many battles have worn it down. Two Forge-made weapons share Sanguine’s material:

| Weapon | Origin | Style |
|---|---|---|
| Chosen by the former Shadow Sovereign | Soul’s original blade | |
| Crafted by Forge | Short twin blades built for speed | |
| Crafted by Forge | A long blade wielded in both hands, suited to sweeping attacks on crowds. |
Characters from Soul’s past (mild spoilers)
Zuo Shang isn’t the only familiar face Soul crosses blades with. Three more people from his history show up, and all three are fought as bosses.
| Character | Role | Tie to Soul |
|---|---|---|
| Spear master of the Order | Old friend who fought beside him | |
| Envoy of the Order | Soul once saved him | |
| Mu Tianmiao’s only daughter | Childhood friend |
Chang Hong is a calm, accomplished spearman within the Order, driven by a strong sense of justice. He and Soul once fought side by side.
Lei Dang lost his right arm on a mission, and Soul saved him. He later fitted a Tiger Cannon to that arm. He arrives in Pangzhen on orders from the new Shadow Sovereign, Zuo Shang.
Mu Xiaokui grew up with Soul. Years ago, the two promised each other that if they ever ended up fighting, neither would hold back. In Phantom Blade Zero, that promise comes due.
