How to Get All Four Empty Bottles in Ocarina of Time

Every bottle location in Hyrule, the prerequisites for each one, and how to confirm the bottle is yours to keep.

Bottles are the quiet workhorses of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. They hold fairies that revive you, potions, milk, blue fire, bugs and fish, and they are the only way to carry a Poe spirit. There are four in the whole game, only one of which the story forces on you. The other three are side content, and two of them are locked to Child Link.

Quick answer: The four bottles come from the Kakariko Cucco roundup, Talon’s Super Cucco game, the bottle at the bottom of Lake Hylia holding Ruto’s Letter, and ten Big Poes sold to the Poe Collector.

What you need before each bottle unlocks

Three of the four gates are easy to miss if you rush the story, so check these off before you go hunting:

  • Talon has to be woken at Hyrule Castle before he returns to Lon Lon Ranch and runs his mini-game.
  • The Silver Scale from Zora’s Domain is what lets you dive deep enough to reach the Lake Hylia bottle.
  • The Big Poe hunt needs Adult Link with Epona and the Fairy Bow from the Forest Temple.
  • One Cucco in Kakariko sits behind a fence and has to be knocked down with a Slingshot shot or a Deku Nut.

Grab the two optional child bottles before you pull the Master Sword. There is no way to redo them as an adult.

Lake Hylia bottle: Ruto’s Letter (the mandatory one)

This is the only bottle the game will not let you skip, because Ruto’s Letter is what opens the path to Jabu-Jabu’s Belly. It starts in Zora’s Domain, not at the lake.

Reach Zora’s Domain as Child Link and find the Zora running the diving game near King Zora’s chamber. Entry costs 20 Rupees.
Collect every rupee he drops into the water before the timer expires, then talk to him again to receive the Silver Scale. The prompt confirms it lets you dive deeper than before by pressing A in the water.
Dive to the floor of Zora’s Domain and swim through the square tunnel at the bottom. It empties out into Lake Hylia.
Surface, look down, and follow the line of rupees on the lakebed. The bottle sits at the end of that trail. Dive down and take it.
Carry the bottle back to King Zora and show him the letter. He shifts aside to open Zora’s Fountain, and the bottle becomes yours as an empty bottle.

Until you deliver the letter, the bottle is occupied and cannot hold anything else. You will want it free immediately, because the next dungeon needs a bottle for fish.

Kakariko Village bottle: round up the Cucco Lady’s seven Cuccos

Anju, the Cucco Lady, stands beside an empty pen near the path to the Graveyard. Her flock has scattered across the village, and she wants all seven thrown back into the pen. The catch is that entering any building or leaving Kakariko resets every Cucco to its starting spot, so finish the whole job in one visit.

All seven Cucco locations in Kakariko Village

  • Right next to the Cucco Lady and her pen.
  • Near the village entrance, by the gate you came in through.
  • Behind the fence outside the House of Skulltula — knock it down with the Slingshot or a Deku Nut.
  • Inside the crate near the tree in the middle of town. Roll into the crate to break it open.
  • Up the stairs near the guard who watches the Death Mountain Trail gate.
  • Behind the Potion Shop, in the fenced-off northeast section.
  • Behind the windmill, reached by the ladder next to the previous Cucco.

The last two are the fiddly ones. Pick up a Cucco you have already found, climb the walkway toward the windmill, and glide over the fence into the northeast area. Once you are inside, throw the loose Cuccos back over the fence toward the pen so you can collect them normally, then use the ladder on the east wall for the windmill Cucco.

Once all seven are in the pen, speak to the Cucco Lady again. The reward message is the plain “You got an Empty Bottle!” text, and the bottle appears on your item screen straight away.

Lon Lon Ranch bottle: Talon’s Super Cucco game

After Talon has been woken outside Hyrule Castle, he goes back to Lon Lon Ranch and sets up shop in the first building on the left, asleep at a table surrounded by Cuccos.

Before you talk to him, pick up every Cucco in the room and toss them behind Talon’s table. They tend to stay put, which clears the floor completely.
Talk to Talon and pay the 10 Rupee fee for the Cucco-findin’ game. He releases three Super Cuccos into the flock, and they look identical to the ordinary ones.
You have 30 seconds. Swing the camera toward the flock as the game starts so you can see where the three new birds land, then grab them one at a time. Talon calls out each correct pick.

Find all three in time and Talon hands over a bottle of Lon Lon Milk. Drink the milk whenever you like — the bottle stays with you either way. Miss the timer and you simply pay another 10 Rupees to retry.

Hyrule Field bottle: sell 10 Big Poes to the Poe Collector

The fourth bottle is the long one. Adult Link needs Epona and the Fairy Bow, and the Ghost Shop only exists after the castle town becomes ruins — it is the old guard tower you pass through between the market and Hyrule Field.

Ten Big Poes are scattered across Hyrule Field. Each one is tied to a fixed patch of ground and only materializes while you are mounted on Epona. They spawn directly in front of the horse no matter which way she faces, so line up your approach before you trigger one or the ghost will drift straight into a cliff.

How to catch a Big Poe

Ride into the Poe’s territory to make it appear. You do not have to keep moving for it to spawn, but it vanishes once it drifts too far from you.
Shoot it twice with the Fairy Bow while still on horseback. Big Poes cannot be Z-targeted, so aim manually and fire the two arrows in quick succession.
Dismount and walk into the spirit it leaves behind. With a free bottle, Link pockets it automatically and you get the “You caught a Big Poe!” message. A defeated Big Poe leaves an orange spirit; ordinary Poes leave purple ones.
Carry your haul to the Poe Collector in the Ghost Shop. He pays out for every Big Poe you hand in and tracks your total on a card.

You can only hold three Big Poes at a time, since the fourth bottle is the prize. Expect at least four round trips to the Ghost Shop, and empty your other bottles before you start.

If a Poe escapes, ride away and come back after a minute or so to let it respawn. Running low on arrows is common on a long hunt — cutting the bushes at the Zora’s River entrance, then leaving and returning to respawn them, refills your quiver. Once the tenth Big Poe is handed over, the Poe Collector declares Link a genuine ghost hunter and gives you the final empty bottle.

What bottles can hold

Once a bottle is empty, it becomes a general-purpose container. Set it to a C button to use whatever is inside.

  • Red, Green and Blue Potions for health, magic, or both.
  • Lon Lon Milk, which gives two servings of five hearts each.
  • A Fairy, which revives Link automatically when he runs out of hearts.
  • Bugs for soft soil patches, and fish for Jabu-Jabu.
  • Blue Fire for melting red ice, and Poe or Big Poe spirits.
  • Water for growing Magic Beans.

Three bottles are enough for most of the game, and the fourth mainly pays off if you like having a spare fairy parked away for boss fights. The one you genuinely cannot afford to skip is the pair of child-only bottles, since the Cucco Lady and Talon are both out of reach the moment the story jumps forward seven years.
