Valheim: How to Get Crystals

Stone Golems in the Mountains drop three to 20 crystals each, and a pickaxe is the weapon that reliably hurts them.

Crystal is a Mountain biome material in Valheim, described in the item card as “A shard of crystal from deep within the earth.” It is not mined out of the ground like silver or obsidian. Instead, it comes off the back of one of the toughest ordinary enemies in the game, and the fight goes very badly if you bring the wrong weapon.

Quick answer: Kill Stone Golems in the Mountain biome using a pickaxe. Every golem drops crystals, starting at three to five per kill, and the shards can be carried through portals.

Find Stone Golems in the Mountain biome

Stone Golems spawn only in the Mountains, and they spend most of their time burrowed. A dormant golem looks like an ordinary boulder, often with just the top of its head poking out of the snow, so you can run straight past a dozen of them without noticing.

They are also passive until something provokes them. Walk up to lone rock formations on high ground and watch for one that shifts, stands up, and shows a health bar labeled Stone Golem. Sometimes a wolf will pick a fight with one first, which saves you the search.

Bring Frost Resistance Mead or wear Wolf Armor before you go hunting. The Mountain cold will kill you faster than any golem will.

Bring a pickaxe to kill a Stone Golem

A Stone Golem has 800 HP and shrugs off almost every weapon type in the game. The exception is pickaxe damage, so an iron pickaxe with plenty of durability left is the tool to carry. Heavy blunt weapons such as maces and clubs are also swung at them, but the pickaxe is what makes the fight finish in a reasonable time.

There are two variants, and they telegraph differently. Learn which one you woke up before you commit to a swing.

VariantAttacksDamage type
Boulder-armed (Sledge)One- and two-handed slamsBlunt
SpikeLunging spike attackPierce
Spike180-degree swipeBlunt

Both variants hit extremely hard in melee range. Keep a sturdy shield up, dodge out of the slam arcs rather than trying to tank them, and get your hits in during the recovery frames. Sneaking in for an opening backstab on a golem that has not noticed you is worth doing when the terrain allows it.

Crystal drop amounts per Stone Golem

Crystals are a guaranteed drop. When the golem dies it bursts apart into a pile of stone and crystal, and the amount scales with the creature’s star level.

26–10100%
312–20100%

You will know it worked when the pickup notifications flash on screen and the Crystal entry appears in your inventory with the “A shard of crystal from deep within the earth” description. The stone comes along with it whether you want it or not.

Frost Caves and Frost Blobs as a second crystal source

Golems are not the only supply. Crystal also grows in clusters inside Frost Caves, and Frost Blobs drop it when killed. The cave clusters are worth a specific note about how you harvest them.

  • Picking a cave crystal by hand yields exactly one crystal.
  • Breaking the same crystal instead yields 1–3, and they are easy to destroy.
  • Frost Blobs inside and around the caves drop crystal on death.

If you are already clearing a Frost Cave for other reasons, smashing the clusters rather than picking them is the better return on the same trip.

Carrying crystals back to base

The in-game item card lists crystal at a weight of 8.0 with a stack size of 50, and that weight adds up fast. One golem’s worth of stone and crystal is usually enough to trigger the “You are carrying too much” warning, which slows you to a crawl on a mountainside where wolves and drakes are hunting.

The good news is that crystal is flagged Teleport: Yes, unlike silver ore. Drop the stone, keep the shards, and portal them straight home instead of sailing them back.

What crystals are used for

Crystal feeds both the build menu and the crafting bench.

  • Crystal Wall 1×1 — building piece, 2 crystals per section
  • Crystal Battleaxe — weapon, 40 Ancient Bark, 30 Silver, 10 Crystal
  • Crystal Heart — crafted item
  • Dvergr Lantern — crafted light source

The wall is the quiet standout. It is the closest thing Valheim has to a glass window, and each piece raises a structure’s Comfort by 1, which makes the Rested buff last longer. The battleaxe is a strong weapon without topping the charts, since the Blackmetal Axe beats it on raw stats and the standard Battleaxe swings faster.

Spawn crystals with a console command

If you would rather skip the hunt on a private world, open the console with F5, enable cheats, then spawn the material directly. The internal item ID is Crystal.

For most players, though, a single trip up the Mountains with an iron pickaxe and a stack of frost resistance mead will cover a base full of crystal walls. Two-star golems are the ones to prioritize, since a single kill can hand over ten times what a fresh golem drops.
