Dragon Eggs are the key item that gates Valheim’s fourth boss. They only appear in the Mountain biome, they glow bright enough to spot across a snowfield, and each one is heavy enough to pin you in place the moment you pick it up. Everything about collecting them is a logistics problem rather than a combat one.
Quick answer: Climb to the high peaks of the Mountain biome, clear the Drakes guarding a stone nest, and haul the glowing egg out on foot. Moder needs three eggs placed on her altar.

The in-game description reads “Far heavier than it looks, with a faint humming sound from within.” That is the whole story of the item. It has no crafting recipe attached to it, it cannot be cooked despite being an egg, and it cannot be hatched into anything. Summoning Moder is its single function, and the eggs are consumed when the summon fires.
Gear you need before entering the Mountain biome
The Mountain biome damages you continuously through cold unless you are protected, and the climb itself drains stamina fast. Sort your loadout before you sail, because there is no quick trip back once you are carrying an egg.
- Cold protection: Wolf armor, or Frost Resistance Mead if you have not farmed silver yet.
- A bow. The Draugr Fang works well for picking Drakes out of the air.
- The Megingjord belt from Haldor the Trader, which adds 150 carrying capacity on top of the base 300.
- Near-empty inventory space, since one egg alone eats two thirds of your default capacity.
- A boat parked at the base of the mountain for the trip between biomes.
The Wolf Hide Chestpiece takes Wolf pelt x20, Silver x5 and Chain x1, so it usually means one mead-fuelled trip up the mountain first to farm wolves and silver. Frost Resistance Mead is brewed from 2 bloodbags, 1 greydwarf eye, 5 thistle and 10 honey, and gives around ten minutes of cover per dose.
Where Dragon Eggs spawn on the Mountain peaks
Eggs sit in rocky Drake nests near the highest points of a mountain, not on the lower slopes. The nests themselves blend into the grey stone and are easy to walk past, but an occupied one is obvious: the egg throws off a strong pink-purple glow that stands out against snow from a long way off. Climbing at night makes that glow even easier to pick out.
Drakes circling overhead are the strongest signal that a nest is nearby. They guard the eggs and fire icy projectiles at range, so shoot them down before you start climbing into the nest itself. Every world seed is different, so there are no fixed coordinates to aim for; if a peak has Drakes but no egg, move along the ridge or to the next mountain.
Find Moder’s altar before you collect anything
Scattered across the mountains are ruined structures, and some of them hold a red boss locator stone. Activating one marks Moder’s summoning platform on your map. Do this first. The altar has three empty slots, and knowing exactly where they are decides which mountain you pull eggs from and where you beach your boat.
If one mountain range holds both the altar and a nest, the whole run gets dramatically shorter, so scout before you start lifting.
How to carry a Dragon Egg back to the altar
Dragon Eggs cannot go through portals. The crossed-out portal icon on the item confirms it, and any attempt to teleport while one is in your inventory will be blocked, so every egg has to travel by land and sea.
Placing the eggs and confirming the summon
Stand at the altar and place three Dragon Eggs into the offering slots. You know it worked when the eggs vanish from the platform and Moder appears above it. The eggs are spent at that moment, so a failed fight means starting the collection over from scratch.
Moder spends much of the fight airborne, where melee and ground effects cannot touch her, and drops down periodically to attack. Those landings are your damage windows. Killing her yields Dragon Tears, which unlock the Artisan table.

Nests refill. Once you take an egg, another one returns to that nest after roughly eight hours. That is long enough that waiting around is rarely the right call, especially if you need a second set after a failed boss attempt.
Marking every nest you pass while exploring the mountains is the practical fix. Three known locations spread across a couple of mountain ranges will always beat camping one peak, and it means the next Moder attempt starts with a sailing route rather than a search.
