Valheim: How to Get and Use the Grappling Hook

Find a Hook in the Mistlands, gather three more materials, and craft this vertical traversal tool at a Black Forge.

Find a Hook in the Mistlands, gather three more materials, and craft this vertical traversal tool at a Black Forge.

The Grappling Hook is a traversal tool added in Valheim 1.0 that pulls you toward walls, cliffs, and other steep surfaces so you can climb and cross gaps that would otherwise force a long detour. Every material comes from the Mistlands, which means you can build it well before you ever set foot in the Deep North, where its usefulness really shows.

Quick answer: Loot a Hook from a Dvergr Treasure Chest inside a Mistlands Infested Mine to unlock the recipe, then craft the Grappling Hook at a Black Forge with 1 Hook, 4 Mandibles, 10 Refined Eitr, and 10 Yggdrasil Wood.

Grappling Hook crafting materials

All four ingredients are Mistlands resources. Three of them drop or gather naturally as you work through the biome, so the Hook is usually the only piece that slows you down.

Mandible4Killed Seeker Soldiers
Refined Eitr10Processed Sap and Soft Tissue in an Eitr Refinery
Yggdrasil Wood10Chopped Yggdrasil Shoots with a Black Metal Axe

Find a Hook to unlock the recipe

The Hook is the only part you cannot craft, and picking one up is what unlocks the Grappling Hook recipe. Hooks appear inside Infested Mines, the Seeker dungeons found in the Mistlands. Look for the large black marble structures covered in yellow growths.

Inspect the walls closely, including side passages and dead ends. Hidden doors are marked with small glowing blue sigils on the stone and are easy to walk past.
Open the hidden passage and loot the Dvergr Treasure Chests inside. These chests have a chance to hold a Hook.

A Hook does not appear in every mine. If you have fully explored one without finding it, search another Infested Mine. In multiplayer, one Hook only makes one Grappling Hook, so each player needs their own.

Gather the other three materials

If you have already spent time in the Mistlands, most of these are probably sitting in your base already. Grabbing Mandibles while you hunt for the Hook saves a separate farming trip.

Mandibles

Mandibles drop from Seeker Soldiers, the large wingless beetle-like enemies found across the Mistlands and inside Infested Mines. You need four.

Yggdrasil Wood

Chop Yggdrasil Shoots found throughout the Mistlands. A regular axe will not cut them, so bring at least a Black Metal Axe. Ten pieces is a quick gather.

Refined Eitr

Refined Eitr is produced in an Eitr Refinery from Sap and Soft Tissue. Collect Sap with a Sap Extractor placed on the glowing Yggdrasil roots, and mine Soft Tissue from Giant remains with a Black Metal Pickaxe or better. Load the refinery and wait for it to process. You need ten.

Craft the Grappling Hook at a Black Forge

Once the recipe is unlocked and you have all four materials, take everything to a Black Forge and craft the Grappling Hook. You will know it worked when the tool appears in your inventory and can be moved into a hotbar slot.

How to use the Grappling Hook

The Grappling Hook is built for climbing, not free swinging. You fire it at a surface, hang from the line, and reel yourself toward the anchor point. It works both vertically and horizontally, which makes steep terrain and gaps far easier to handle.

Equip the tool and aim at a wall, cliff, or structure within range. Press the primary attack button to fire. There is a short delay before it launches, so line up the shot before you commit.
Once the hook latches, it pulls you forward slightly and leaves you hanging. Press the jump button to reel yourself closer to the anchor point. Firing and pulling both drain stamina, so watch the bar. If you do nothing while hanging, you slowly descend.
When you reach the spot you want, press the secondary attack or block button to release the hook. Fire again at a higher surface if you need to keep climbing.

Practice near your base before relying on it over a big drop. The firing delay takes getting used to, which makes it better as a planned climbing tool than a last-second save while falling.

Where the Grappling Hook helps most

It is already handy in the Mistlands, but it becomes far more valuable once you push into the Deep North, where cliffs, towers, and multi-level dungeons are constant. Common uses include:

  • Climbing high walls and towers
  • Scaling steep cliffs
  • Escaping deep pits
  • Exploring multi-level dungeons
  • Getting back to higher ground after a bad fall

Because every ingredient is a Mistlands resource, it is worth crafting the Grappling Hook before you head into Valheim’s final biome. Having it ready turns a lot of exhausting vertical hikes into quick, direct climbs.
