Sinister Tidings is the short, quiet mission that closes out the Japan chapter of Marvel’s Wolverine. Logan wakes up hungover in Shiro’s Shinjuku penthouse, and almost nothing in the apartment is interactive until you do one specific thing. That single trigger is what gates the entire cleanup.
Quick answer: Use the bathroom sink (or the alcohol) to trigger the mirror cutscene. Only then do the Material Crate and the purple roots for the Crucible of Tears Nightmare Door appear upstairs.

Sinister Tidings mission details
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Chapter | Japan (Shinjuku) |
| Mission number | 21 of 30 |
| Nightmare Doors | 1 (Crucible of Tears) |
| Whisky Bottles | 0 |
There is also a Material Crate tucked into the apartment, though some collectible trackers list this mission as crate-free. Open it anyway — it costs you about ten seconds and feeds suit crafting later.
Nothing here is permanently missable. Once Mission Replay unlocks through the Nightmare Cabin, you can return to Mission 21 and pick up whatever the tracker still shows as missing.

Crucible of Tears: Surviving the gauntlet
Crucible of Tears is a gauntlet trial rather than a puzzle or a stealth room. The objective is simple to state and brutal to execute — survive as many waves of Hand enemies as you can across a snow-covered arena. Entering the door is enough to tick the collectible, but the rewards scale with how far you push.
Before each block of waves you pick combat modifiers from a pair of idols, then destroy one to begin. The opening choice is between Selfish and Brutish, with Doomed, Eruptive, Primal, Calculating, and Wrathful showing up as you progress deeper.

Waves 1 through 5 are straightforward sword-carrying ninja. From wave 6 onward the arena mixes in archers, and by the mid-teens the groups get noticeably more aggressive and arrive in overlapping packs. Parries and finishers keep your health topped up far more reliably than raw aggression does.

The back half is where the trial earns its name. Waves 16 to 20 add brute enemies to the ninja mix, and waves 21 to 24 bring heavily armored samurai brutes, Hand invokers, and archers together at once. Clearing wave 25 ends the run and pops the Secondary Mutations trophy.

Crucible of Tears rewards by score tier
| Tier | Reward |
|---|---|
| Bronze | +4 AP |
| Silver | Gold Claws |
| Gold | Future Fugitive Suit Part |
| Adamantium | Hellverine Suit Part |
Tiers stack, so a full 25-wave clear hands you everything in one sitting. As a benchmark, a run that reaches the end scores in the mid-46,000s, comfortably inside Adamantium range. Anything short of that still banks the lower tiers you cleared.
The Gold Claws unlock is cosmetic, but the AP is not. Spend it in the Techniques tree or on Adaptations before you head back through the portal.

Confirming the mission is fully cleared
After the final wave, cut the roots to free the memory. That unlocks a memory sculpture — a car from 1925, with Logan narrating a bootlegging run and a fire he walked away from. Viewing it confirms the Nightmare Door is fully resolved rather than merely entered.
Back in the penthouse, open the pause menu and check the collectible tracker for the mission. The finished state is 1 Nightmare Door and no Whisky Bottles, plus the crate if your tracker counts one. Confirm the number moved before you leave — a story interaction is not the same as a registered pickup.
Once the counter matches, head downstairs to the kitchen. Shiro hands Logan a coffee, Jean wraps a call with Callisto, and the three discuss the Lowtown lockdown and Essex’s plans. That briefing closes out Japan and pushes you into Way Down Low.
