RuneScape Dragonwilds: Wooden Training Sword and Leggings of Lightness Guide

Two rooftop chests near the starting area hold blueprints for a stronger early weapon and extra carrying capacity.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds left Early Access on September 15, 2026, arriving on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. If you are starting a fresh world on any of them, two early upgrades sit in plain sight and are easy to walk straight past. Both are Vestige blueprints locked inside chests on rooftops near the opening quest area, and both are craftable within your first hour.

Quick answer: Build wooden scaffolding up the side of the church and the windmill, loot the rooftop chest at each, then study the two Vestige blueprints to unlock the Wooden Training Sword and Leggings of Lightness recipes.

What the Wooden Training Sword and Leggings of Lightness do

The Stone Club is the weapon most players craft first because Doric points you at it. The Wooden Training Sword beats it on almost every line.

Max durability700850

You trade one hit off the combo chain for a much higher damage floor and ceiling, plus more block and more durability. Giant Rats and Goblin Warriors that take several swings with the club fold quickly with the sword.

The Leggings of Lightness are a different kind of upgrade. They have a Power Level of 0.0 and give +0 melee, ranged and magic defence, so they are not armour in any meaningful sense. What they carry is the Lightness special effect, which raises how much you can haul before you start getting weighed down. On a first playthrough full of ore, logs and quest materials, that is worth more than a few points of defence.

What you need before you start

  • Enough wood in your inventory to place scaffolding pieces, stairs and platforms against a building.
  • A built Crafting Table you can return to.
  • 35 Ash Logs for the Wooden Training Sword.
  • 10 Wool and 10 Feathers for the Leggings of Lightness.

Zanik’s Rune Mysteries quest asks for 50 Ash Logs, and the sword costs another 35. Chop with both totals in mind or you will hand over your logs and have to go back out to the trees.

Church rooftop chest: An Educational Blade blueprint

Head to the church near the starting area, the large stone building you pass while running between the Wise Old Man, Doric and Zanik. Walk around the outside and find a wall with clear ground next to it.
Open the build menu and stack wooden scaffolding, stairs and platforms up that wall until you can reach the roof ledge. There is no climbing route here, so the structure is the only way up.
Cross onto the ledge and open the chest sitting on it. Inside is An Educational Blade, tagged as a Vestige, alongside some loose materials.
Open your inventory, select the blueprint and study it. That is the action that unlocks the recipe permanently, not simply having the item in your bag.

Windmill rooftop chest: Suspiciously Light Tattered Boots blueprint

Travel to the windmill in the same stretch of countryside where Vannaka sends you to clear out rats. It is a short run from his tent.

Build another scaffolding run against the windmill until you can step onto its roof. The same wooden pieces work, so keep spare wood on you after the church trip.
Open the chest on top to receive Suspiciously Light Tattered Boots, the second Vestige blueprint. The name refers to boots, but the recipe it teaches is for leggings.
Study it from your inventory to add the Leggings of Lightness to your crafting list.

Crafting both items at the Crafting Table

Return to your base and interact with the Crafting Table. Both new recipes sit in the standard lists, the sword under weapons and the leggings under the Legs armour slot.
Select the Wooden Training Sword and craft it with your 35 Ash Logs, then equip it in place of the Stone Club.

Switch to the Legs slot, select the Leggings of Lightness and craft them with 10 Wool and 10 Feathers. Equip them straight away; there is nothing better to put in that slot this early.

How to confirm the upgrades worked

After studying each blueprint, the matching recipe appears in the Crafting Table list. If you cannot see the Wooden Training Sword or the Leggings of Lightness there, the blueprint is still sitting unread in your inventory.

With the sword equipped, the item card reads 21–25 slash damage and a Barge special action, and the durability bar starts at 850/850. With the leggings equipped, the carrying capacity bar at the bottom of the inventory screen extends compared to an empty Legs slot.

Both blueprints stay unlocked once studied, so you can recraft either item later without going back up a roof. Doric’s stone club tasks, Vannaka’s rat hunt and the Ash Log deliveries for Rune Mysteries all go faster with the sword in hand and the leggings on, which is reason enough to make the two detours before pushing further into the opening quest chain.
