The locked black box sitting on the office desk in 5 Upper Brae is one of three barcode puzzles standing between you and the Atlas Way gate in Clara Woods. Its combination is never written down anywhere. Instead, you have to shuffle a set of cassettes through a transcription player, move the house between yesterday, today, and tomorrow, and read three separate numbers that only exist in different versions of the same rooms.

Quick answer: The black box code in 5 Upper Brae is 129. It opens with Tape: Today loaded, and the barcode inside gives you Locker 94’s PIN, 490.

What you need before entering 5 Upper Brae

This house is inaccessible during your initial visit to Clara Woods. The chain blocking the path to Upper Braes can only be cut with the Boltcutters, found in Locker 17 inside the CEG Lockers building. To open that locker, first solve the puzzle involving a floppy disk in 5 South Brae.

  • Boltcutters from Locker 17, used on the chained gate above CEG Lockers.
  • Three Mechanical Parts total are needed for the Atlas Way gate, and Locker 94 holds one of them.
  • A quick look at the Clara Woods Estate map to orient yourself on the Upper Level before climbing the stairs into building 5.

How the tape player changes the house

Upstairs in the office you will find a desk holding the transcription player, the locked black box, and a note reading “TODAY MY NUMBER WAS:” with the digits smeared out. Pull Tape: Today out of the player first, because you will need to swap it back in at the end.

Every tape you load rewrites the state of the building. Rooms that were empty now hold boxes, doors change, and a different note sits out on a table. Only one tape can play at a time, so each number you are after lives in exactly one version of the house. Here is what each recording gives you.

The Do Not Play version puts an enemy behind the locked bathroom door and another one out in the garden. Neither has to be fought, and there is nothing worth grabbing outside while that tape is running.

Full tape sequence in 5 Upper Brae

Head into the back-right bedroom on the upper floor and open the black box on the table to collect Tape: Yesterday. This is your first swap, and the only tape you can reach without altering anything.

Return to the desk, insert Tape: Yesterday, and press play. The house shifts around you. Go downstairs and open the box in the living room to take Tape: Tomorrow.
While Yesterday is still running, check the table in the kitchen area downstairs. The note there reads TODAY MY NUMBER WAS: 192. Write it down, because you cannot come back for it once the tape changes.

Go back up and play Tape: Tomorrow. Downstairs, the kitchen now has a box containing Tape: Do Not Play. Grab it before you look for anything else.
Still in the Tomorrow state, find the second note near the living room and hallway. It reads TODAY MY NUMBER WAS: 125. That is your second reference number.

Load Tape: Do Not Play. The screen floods red and the audio distorts, and the house takes its worst form. Walk into the kitchen and pick up the Back Door Key from beside the sink.

Switch back to Tape: Today, then use the Back Door Key on the rear exit. Head out to the garage and take the Ammonite Disk from the small table inside. A crawling creature will come at you the moment you step outside, so grab the disk and get back in.
Play Tape: Yesterday one more time. The computer in the office works in this state, so turn it on and slot the Ammonite Disk into the disk reader beside the keyboard to pull up the Current Count file.

Working out the 129 combination

The Current Count file lists a long descending run of numbers. The stretch that matters reads 199, 195, 192, 129, 125, 122. You already know 192 and 125 from the two notes, and they sit one apart in the sequence with a single value wedged between them. That value is today’s number.

The blurred note on the desk was never meant to be read directly. The file fills in the gap instead, which is why the combination comes out as 129.

While you have Tape: Tomorrow handy, the garden shed is reachable in that state, and Strange Postcard #14 is waiting inside.

Opening the box and unlocking Locker 94

The black box is only solid in one version of the house, so put Tape: Today back in the player before you try the dial. Enter 129 and the lid opens, giving you Barcode (Upper Brae). The ticket is rented to Lewis Coburn at 5 Upper Brae and is marked for Locker 94.

Carry it back down to the CEG Lockers building and run it through the barcode scanner. The terminal prints the locker number and its PIN, listing Locker 94 with the code 490. Punch that into the combination lock and the door opens.

Inside you get the Mechanical Part along with Gauze and Pistol Rounds. You will know the puzzle is finished when the Mechanical Part lands in your inventory, since that is the only item here that counts toward the Atlas Way gate.

With the second Mechanical Part in hand, the remaining one is locked behind the Lamenting Poem puzzle at 6 North Brae, which uses code 736 for its box and 971 for Locker 204. Collect all three and the Atlas Way gate finally opens.
