World of Warcraft: Where to Tame a Dire Mottled Boar

The Dire Mottled Boar is the first target Horde Hunters need for the class quest Taming the Beast. It is a low-level Beast that wanders the open ground of Durotar, and taming one is a required step before you can move on to the other creatures in the chain.

Quick answer: Head straight south of Razor Hill into the open plains of Durotar, find a roaming Dire Mottled Boar, and use the quest-provided Taming Rod on it.

Dire Mottled Boars roam the dusty red plains directly south of Razor Hill. From the town, run out into the open fields and you will start seeing them scattered across the terrain. The area sits north of Sen’jin Village and east to northeast of the Valley of Trials, so any of those points can be used as a starting reference.

How to tame the Dire Mottled Boar for Taming the Beast

The quest gives you a Taming Rod, a quest item you use on the boar to complete the objective. You do not need to fight it down first. Follow these steps in order.

Leave Razor Hill and run south into the open plains. Keep going until you spot a Dire Mottled Boar wandering the red dirt fields.

Target the boar by clicking it or approaching until it is selected. A yellow selection ring will appear beneath the creature to confirm it is your target.

Start taming the boar with the Taming Rod. Select it in your bags or use the shortcut icon displayed next to the objective on your quest tracker. The tooltip explains that the rod is used to tame the boar.

Let the channel finish. The rod channels for a short time while the boar attacks, and once the cast completes the beast is tamed. Keep it satisfied for the brief window so you gain insight into its nature.

The full quest also asks you to tame a Surf Crawler and an Armored Scorpid, so once the boar is done you can move on to those targets in the same chain.

How to confirm the tame worked

When the Taming Rod’s channel completes, the Dire Mottled Boar objective in your quest tracker updates to show it as done. That progress mark is your confirmation that this part of Taming the Beast is finished, leaving the Surf Crawler and Armored Scorpid steps still to complete.
