Valor Mortis: What Nephtoglobin Is and How to Refill It

In Valor Mortis, Nephtoglobin joins Health and Endurance as one of your three core stats. It also pays for weapon infusions. Across the world, the name appears on red-and-orange growths, glowing weak spots, and pale blue blooms. If you searched for “neuroglobin” or “haptoglobin”, the word you are after is Nephtoglobin. Once you know the five ways to restore it, topping it up is easy.

Quick answer: Rest at a Lantern to fully restore your Nephtoglobin, or top it up with a Nephtoglobin Vial, pick up Nephtoglobin Remnants from destroyed weak points, freeze enemies with Stasis, or take the Nephtoglobin Extraction skill.

What Nephtoglobin is in Valor Mortis

Check DETAILED STATISTICS on the Level Up screen to see your totals for “Maximum Health”, “Maximum Nephtoglobin” and “Maximum Endurance”. At the start, Maximum Nephtoglobin is 100, while Maximum Health is 100 and Maximum Endurance is 80.

You spend Nephtoglobin on firearm infusions. The Pistol’s upgrade “Nephtoglobin Infusion — Bullet” reads: “Hold [Reload] to infuse your Firearm with a Posture-breaking bullet. The infusion costs Nephtoglobin.” The Musket and Blunderbuss have their own Nephtoglobin Infusions, an explosive round and a Stasis grenade, and both also cost Nephtoglobin.

The word also labels things in the environment: the plague growths and glowing “Nephtoglobin Weak Spots” on enemies and walls, and the Nephtoglobin Blossoms that block doorways.

How to refill Nephtoglobin

There are five ways to put Nephtoglobin back, from a full reset at a Lantern to small top-ups in the middle of a fight.

Rest at a Lantern. The first-rest tutorial states: “Resting at a Lantern has the following effects:” “Health and Nephtoglobin are fully restored.” “All non-boss enemies are revived.” This is your free full refill, with the trade-off that regular enemies come back.

Use a Nephtoglobin Vial. The consumable’s text reads: “Use it to refill your Nephtoglobin.” You can carry 3. They are scattered through the world, with several in The Battlefield alone and more in the Valley of Ashes, Caverns and later regions. Some enemies drop them. Louis’s Laboratoire in the Abandoned Church sells them for 200 Catalysts each, and Lucjan sells a couple later in the story.

Pick up Nephtoglobin Remnants. The tutorial reads: “Destroying Nephtoglobin Weak Points on enemies will drop Nephtoglobin Remnants, which can be picked up to restore your Nephtoglobin.” Shoot or stab the glowing weak points, then walk over the Remnants they leave behind.

Freeze enemies with Stasis. The “Stasis Segments” tutorial reads: “Completely filling a Stasis Segment deals damage and expels a Nephtoglobin Remnant from the enemy. The stronger the enemy, the more Stasis Segments must be filled to freeze it.” Using the Stasis Transmutation, which arrives in Chapter IV, feeds you Remnants as you freeze things.

Land melee hits with Nephtoglobin Extraction. Once you take this skill, “Melee Attacks extract additional Nephtoglobin.” It has 4 ranks, each adding +15%.

Raise your maximum Nephtoglobin and Remnant yield

At a Lantern, open LEVEL UP to purchase skills. Some increase your maximum Nephtoglobin, while others boost the amount restored by each Remnant.

SkillEffectPer rankRanks
Nephtoglobin Sufferance“Increases Maximum Nephtoglobin.”+104 (100 to 140), plus a second node of 4
Nephtoglobin Remnants“Nephtoglobin Remnants restore more Nephtoglobin.”+10%4
Nephtoglobin Sufferance and Transmutation Damage“Increases Maximum Nephtoglobin and damage dealt with Transmutations.”+2 max, +1% Transmutation damageUp to 100

The first Nephtoglobin Sufferance node has four ranks, raising your maximum from 100 to 140. Farther along the tree, another node with the same name provides four additional ranks. The first Sufferance node is open from the start; the second one and the combined Sufferance and Transmutation Damage node sit further along the tree.

Weak spots, growths and Nephtoglobin Blossoms

Nephtoglobin Weak Spots

The glowing weak spots burst when you hit them with a gun or the Rapier, not with fire. The Pistol’s tutorial reads: “The Pistol is a trusty sidearm, perfect for destroying Nephtoglobin Weak Spots.” The Rapier’s reads: “The Rapier is a fast and precise weapon that can destroy Nephtoglobin Weak Spots”. Destroying them drops the Remnants covered above.

Plague growths over paths

Plague formations hanging above a route have glowing orbs you can target. Destroy the orbs to clear the growth and uncover the way forward. During the Caverns minecart ride, shoot the formation above the track with the Pistol to pass through.

Nephtoglobin Blossoms

The pale blue, flower-like growths that fill doorways are Nephtoglobin Blossoms. Approach one and the prompt reads “[E] PULL (HOLD)” with the hint “Hold [E] to pull the Nephtoglobin Blossoms, unlocking new paths.” Holding the key uses your Grappling hand to tear the Blossom away and open the doorway.
