How to Balance the Scales of Justice in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse

Stand on the left pan, press R1, and let your blood level the scale to set Leon's trial in motion.

Stand on the left pan, press R1, and let your blood level the scale to set Leon’s trial in motion.

Leon’s trial before Saint Louis is a cutscene. There is no dialogue menu, no option to pick, and no way to answer “correctly.” The part you actually control comes first, at the Scales of Justice in the Palace of Justice. Balance the scale, and the trial runs on its own.

Quick answer: Stand on the left pan of the scale, press R1 (INTERACT), and your health drains into the corrupted heart on the right pan until both sides level.

Where the Scales of Justice are

The scale sits in the Palace of Justice, reached through the Court of Justice in Paris Streets. It is a huge tree-like statue holding two pans. The left pan is empty, and the right pan holds a dark, corrupted heart laced with red veins.

A plaque at the base, headed “BALANCING THE SCALES OF JUSTICE”, reads: “Neither tyranny nor force may move the scales of justice, Only that which is written on the heart and the spirit of the law.” Reading it also unlocks a clue for The Judge.

How to balance the scale

Make your way into the Palace of Justice through the Court of Justice in Paris Streets, and approach the tree-like scale statue holding the two pans.
Jump onto the empty left pan and stand on it. The prompt shows “INTERACT [R1]” when you are in position.

Press R1. A red tether runs from Rose across to the corrupted heart, your health bar drains into it, and the scale levels. The trophy “The King is dead, long live the King” pops, and the heart turns to gold.

The drain leaves you on very low health, so clear the area first and do not expect a fight straight after.

If pressing R1 does nothing

Try the pan too early and nothing happens. Rose simply says, “Looks like it didn’t do anything.” The attempt that works comes later in the story, after the Death fight in the Notre-Dame Transept, when your health bar is longer. Return to the scale at that point and use R1 again.

The trial cutscene

Once the heart turns gold, the statue wakes. The speaker label first reads “THE JUDGE”, then changes to “SAINT LOUIS.” Leon appears, and Medusa accuses him, arguing that his soul is still unjudged and that justice will tip out of balance unless his case is heard.

Saint Louis lets Rose speak in defence of her clan. She argues over Leon’s intent, and Saint Louis delivers his ruling. The lines advance with the Cross button only, with no option labels to pick. He declares justice restored, says Dracula’s hold on him is broken, and offers Rose his power.

Rewards for balancing the scale

When the trial ends, a golden orb is left on the scale. Strike it to collect your rewards.

The Judge is an Arcana card that grants the spell CHAINS OF JUSTICE: “Chains enemies around Rose, preventing them from moving for 4 seconds. The first time a chained enemy would take damage, they take added bonus damage.” Its prompts read HOLD TO EQUIP and CONTINUE.

Valmanway is a Legendary weapon with ATK 75: “A wind-infused legendary blade. Attacks are doubled after a quick delay.” Its listed moves are “Attack right after a backdash or slide to deal more damage.” and “Dash through.”
