Rose Belmont walks past two lit candle stands by a sewer gate in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse

Lamplighter is the Steam achievement with the description “Destroy 666 candles”, and it is the matching trophy on PlayStation 5. You earn it by breaking candles and lamps as Rose moves through the game, and the total carries across your whole save rather than one area or one sitting.

Quick answer: Make a habit of striking each candelabrum and sconce along your path. Across the nine areas, roughly 1,529 candles are placed; 666 is just below half, and breaking the ones on your normal route covers most of that total.

Every Mirror of Life, boss, relic and collectible is marked on our Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse interactive map.

What counts toward the 666

Any candle or lamp Rose breaks with her attacks adds to the count, and one hit breaks one. Three kinds all count the same way.

  • Candle stands that sit on the ground, like the pair flanking a sewer gate.
  • Candles and lamps on the back wall, such as the one glowing on a sewer wall.
  • Lamps fixed to the side walls.

Breaking candles while you fight through the early Paris sewers is an easy habit to start, since you pass stands and wall lamps constantly.

Candles by area

The candles are not spread evenly. Paris Streets holds the most, and the later palace areas hold the fewest. These counts are approximate.

Catacombs of Paris212

Because the first four areas on this list carry so many, clearing candles there early does the heavy lifting toward 666.

Rooms with the most candles

Some single rooms let you break a large batch in one stop. The Prison Tower in Paris Streets has the most of any room, around 46 candles. These counts are approximate.

Several districts are worth a sweep across their rooms rather than a single room. The Circle of Greed in the Catacombs holds about 38 across its rooms, the Mausoleum of the Kings in Holy Innocents’ Cemetery about 26, and in the Main Hall the Entrance Corridor and West Hall hold about 24 and 23. In Paris Streets, the Abandoned Sewers and Sewer Reservoir add about 22 and 21.

The fastest route to 666

At the outset, use your whip on each stand or wall-mounted lamp you encounter. One strike is enough to smash it, so detours are seldom necessary.
If your path takes you through a room filled with candles, clear every candle in it. Give priority to Prison Tower in Paris Streets and the Main Hall areas: Grand Hall, Entrance Corridor, West Hall, and Dungeon.
If the achievement remains locked late in the game, retrace your route through the candle-dense areas—Paris Streets first, then Notre-Dame, next Main Hall, and finally the Catacombs—and destroy any candles you missed.

How you know it worked

Lamplighter is awarded as soon as your candle-breaking total reaches 666. On a full run with candles smashed along the way, it unlocked in Notre-Dame’s Chapel of Patience, after the story’s midpoint. Making candle-whipping routine should therefore earn it around the game’s middle.

Candles do not count toward the Progress percentage. You can reach 100 percent completion without breaking them, and Lamplighter is a separate achievement from Perfectionist Hunter. The full achievements and trophies list covers the rest.
