If you’re hoping to fight waves of undead in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, you won’t find that in the new game. Activision built Modern Warfare 4 around three parts: a story Campaign, competitive Multiplayer and the extraction mode DMZ. None of them is a round-based zombie mode.
Through October 2026, Activision has made no announcement of Zombies or another round-based undead offering for Modern Warfare 4. Nor has the publisher officially said whether it might add one later.
Modern Warfare 4 modes at launch
The full game opens on Friday 23 October 2026. Pre-ordering or pre-purchasing a digital edition lets you access two of the three modes early.
| Mode | Type | Early Access (digital pre-orders) |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign | Story missions | Opened 16 October 2026 |
| Multiplayer | Player versus player | None listed |
| DMZ | Extraction | Starts Tuesday 20 October 2026 (PT) |
Across its sixteen missions, the Campaign visits the Korean Peninsula, Paris, New York, and Mumbai. Private Park Hyun Jun, a young South Korean soldier, is caught up in the North Korean invasion, as Captain Price conducts a separate covert operation.

Multiplayer is the competitive side of the game. At launch it includes:
- 12 Core 6v6 maps, each with its own infil
- Kill Block, a training-facility map with more than 500 configurations, each changing its layout between rounds
- Dedicated Gunfight maps
- Big War maps for large fights with vehicles and infantry
Kill Block includes Gunfight matches in 3v3 and 10v10 formats. Progression offers two paths, Classic Prestige and Prestige. These modes match you against other players, so they don’t offer the Zombies experience found in other Call of Duty games.

DMZ is where most of Modern Warfare 4’s fighting against AI happens. It takes place in Hajin, an exclusion zone on the Korean peninsula left behind after the events of the Campaign. You can deploy on your own or with a squad. For the basics, see how DMZ works.

Hajin is crowded with hostile forces. The more attention you draw, the harder the zone pushes back, because a threat system raises the enemy response. The AI you can run into includes:
- Patrols and convoys
- Helicopters
- Large enemy squads
- Special Lieutenants with their own units
- Tanks, drone swarms, Juggernauts, and Elite Strike Teams are among the threats posed by roaming Commanders.

DMZ deployment types
You choose how to enter Hajin each time you deploy. There are three options:
- Story Missions: replayable narrative missions that continue the Modern Warfare 4 story
- Dynamic Operations: objectives created for each match and completed over multiple steps
- Free Roam: open deployment into the zone

After a deployment, you return to the Forward Operating Base (FOB). There, you manage your Stash and Operators, craft using the 3D Printer, and review the Boss Board.
How DMZ differs from a Zombies-style mode
Other squads and solo players drop into the same Hajin match as you, so real people can hunt you down while you deal with the AI.
Losing in DMZ also costs you something. If you fail to extract, you lose what’s in your Backpack, apart from anything in a Secure Slot. Your Operator can also go Missing In Action (MIA), and getting them back costs in-game cash at the FOB.
DMZ, like Multiplayer, requires an uninterrupted internet connection.
Where to play Call of Duty Zombies right now
Zombies is a mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, which is a separate game and a separate purchase from Modern Warfare 4. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can still access Black Ops 7 as a legacy title. Modern Warfare 4 isn’t included in Game Pass at launch.
Warzone is linked to the new game as well. Beginning in Season 1, it incorporates Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression into a connected experience, but it remains Warzone rather than a Zombies mode. Modern Warfare 4’s seasonal plans have not been detailed, and there is no official word on whether Zombies might be added later.
