To get sand in Enshrouded, you dig the ground with the Pickaxe. The Kindlewastes gives you Sand and Fine Sand, while the Veilwater Basin and Cinder’s Cradle each give their own sand. Picking up your first Sand unlocks the Glass recipes.
Quick answer: With the Pickaxe equipped, keep Mine pressed while targeting terrain in the Kindlewastes to gather Sand.
Where to get each kind of sand
In Enshrouded 1.0, Sand comes from digging terrain with the Pickaxe. Your region determines the variety you collect, but the method is the same for each type. There are four naturally occurring sands, along with Shroud Sand and one crafted sand.

| Sand | Where you get it | Item text |
|---|---|---|
| Sand | Dig the ground in the Kindlewastes | “A mix of soil, rock, and sediment.” |
| Fine Sand | Dig the ground in the Kindlewastes | “A mix of soil, rock, and sediment.” |
| Veilwater Basin Sand | Dig the ground in the Veilwater Basin | “A bright, silvery white sand that mostly consists of crushed seashells.” |
| Cinder’s Cradle Sand | Dig the ground in Cinder’s Cradle | “Fine, dark sand found along volcanic shorelines.” |
| Shroud Sand | Dig the ground in the Kindlewastes Shroud, or make it at the Laboratory | “Fine sand that’s been infused with Shroud spores. Commonly found in the Kindlewastes biome.” |
| Fertile Kindlewastes Sand | Craft it at the Workbench | “A mix of soil, rock, and sediment.” |
Sand, Fine Sand and Fertile Kindlewastes Sand all have the Drainage property, which reads “This material drains a small amount of water when overflown.” Sand, Fine Sand, Veilwater Basin Sand, Cinder’s Cradle Sand and Fertile Kindlewastes Sand stack to 1000. Shroud Sand stacks to 250.
In the journal, Sand, Fine Sand and Fertile Kindlewastes Sand sit in the Kindlewastes Terrain Materials set. Veilwater Basin Sand belongs to the Veilwater Basin set, and Cinder’s Cradle Sand to the Cinder’s Cradle set.

How to get Shroud Sand and what it makes
Dig for Shroud Sand in the Kindlewastes Shroud, or craft it at the Laboratory instead. There, combine 10 Sandstone with 5 Acidic Mycelium to produce 100 Shroud Sand. You can dig up Acidic Mycelium in the Nomad Highlands Shroud.

Shroud Sand goes into these recipes:
- Nine pairs of armor boots, 20 Shroud Sand each: Assassin, Deadeye and Deerstalker Boots at the Hunter
- Soldier, Rogue and Warden Boots at the Blacksmith
- Warlock, Sage and Archmage Boots at the Alchemist
- Spice at the Laboratory: 15 Shroud Sand, 1 Saffron, 1 Chamomile, 1 Rooibos, 1 Kindlewastes Flower (makes 10)
