You can’t beat Umbra in your first fight with him in Final Fantasy Resonance. That encounter with him beyond Grandshelt Castle is a mandatory story sequence designed to end without a victory.
Quick answer: Libra lists Umbra at Lv.17 and shows 99999/99999 HP; Escape is unavailable. Hold out for roughly two rounds, then a cutscene ends the battle automatically.
Where you fight Umbra
Umbra shows up at the end of the Grandshelt Castle section of Chapter 1, “Tailing the Truth”. Once you’ve taken down Hell’s Rider and reached the throne room, the wounded King of Grandshelt explains that the enemy went for the Royal Vault to steal the Divine Signet. Rain and Lasswell then escort him outside, where a group of armored warriors is waiting on the castle steps.
A voice greets the party with “So, you have acquired the power of visions.”

It follows up with “I warned you. Ignorance is a sin.”

Rain snaps back, “That again? Start making sense, or keep your mouth shut.” The leader then steps forward wrapped in dark flames and introduces himself: “I am one of the Sworn Six of Paladia…Umbra, Veritas of the Dark.” The battle begins immediately after that line.

Every drop and steal slot is blank, so there’s nothing to farm or pickpocket here. On your side, it’s just Rain and Lasswell, around Lv.8 with 587 and 576 HP. The command menu lists Attack, Defend, Items, and Escape, but Escape is greyed out, so you can’t run either.

What happens in the Umbra battle
Play your turns like any other fight: attack, heal, or defend. After about two rounds, the battle ends on its own and a cutscene takes over as Umbra raises a pillar of dark energy.

He tells Rain, “Now, you must atone…for seven centuries of sin.” Before he can follow through, a Mysterious Girl appears in a burst of light and declares, “You’ll not harm Rain!”

Umbra doesn’t push it. “It matters not. The Divine Signet is in my possession. I shall not tarry here any longer.”

He then leaves with the other warriors after a short “Let us depart.”

There’s no Battle Result screen, no EXP, and no items from this encounter. There’s also no game over, so you don’t need to save specially for it.
After the Umbra fight: Fina and the road to Felicitas
The scene moves to the castle grounds, where Rain tells the girl, “…You saved me.” Her name is Fina, and she has no memory of her past: “I can’t remember… anything.”

In the King’s bedroom, the King connects the dots: “So it was by their hand the Earth Crystal was shattered.”

Charlotte links the wraith soldiers to Kolobos Ruins and recommends stopping in Felicitas first, calling it “the closest town from the ruins”. Rain is asked, “(What’s our next move?)”, and must choose between heading to Felicitas immediately to pursue the armored warriors or searching for more visions first.
The sequence concludes when you regain control in the capital’s Commercial District, with Go to the town of Felicitas displayed in the quest tracker. For the complete path covering the castle, throne room, and finale, see the Grandshelt Castle walkthrough.

Fina joins the party soon after, in the field outside the capital (“Fina joined the party!”), and the next objective becomes “Go to the village of Kol”.
