Quick answer: Gu Wanyue, the Wailing Wraith fights in a flooded square about 46 m from the Pond of Fading Song bell in Pangzhen, with one 53,410 HP bar. Watch for her black fog: her grabs that follow take about half of Soul’s health on Pathbreaker.
Gu Wanyue, the Wailing Wraith is a barefoot, white-haired woman in pale robes. She fights with long white sleeves, leaps, black fog and grabs, and she has a habit of vanishing right before she does the most damage. The damage figures below are for Soul with 1,402 max HP and 3 healing gourds, on both Pathbreaker (the default difficulty) and Wayfarer (the easier mode). Her fight sits with the others on the full boss list.

Her fight is in Pangzhen, beside the Pond of Fading Song. Rest at the Pond of Fading Song bell, then keep walking into the flooded square about 46 m away. The Pangzhen interactive map shows the area.
The square is wide and waterlogged, with broken paving, ruined wooden houses on either side and white paper offerings scattered across the ground. Gu Wanyue waits at the far end beside a shrine ringed with red candles. Walk toward her and her name bar appears, which means the fight has started.
Gu Wanyue’s attacks
The game provides no attack names, so the descriptions below identify each move by its appearance. The standard color cues apply: blue indicates an attack you can parry, while red marks one that requires a dodge instead.
Sleeve lash
As she advances, she often swings a long white sleeve in a broad arc. Its reach is deceptive, extending well beyond her body; retreat or dodge through the sweep instead of relying on apparent distance.

Crossed sleeves
If you are close, she thrusts both sleeves forward, crossing them into an X. This catches players who stand right in front and trade blows, so move sideways.

Spinning leap
She springs into the air and spins, sleeves fanned out around her, then comes down on Soul. Dodge out from under her as she rises.

Black fog
Her black fog darkens the entire arena until Soul can hardly make her out. You cannot deflect the fog. Stop attacking, stay in motion, and wait until she appears again; she uses the cover to set up grabs.

Flying grab
She vanishes beyond your reach, then, after a few seconds, swoops back in with a spinning leap and grabs Soul. The move often connects after you dodge once and advance again. On Pathbreaker it deals 683 HP, roughly half of Soul’s 1,402, and she can use it twice in one fight.
Keep your guard raised and stay back while she is out of range; be ready to dodge as she dives in. After just one dodge, do not hurry forward to attack.

Purple aura
Sometimes red sparks fly as purple energy surrounds her during an attack. Stay clear until the aura disappears.

Scream
Her scream distorts the air and makes the screen blur. Since it cannot be deflected, get out of its way rather than blocking.

Red-flash attacks
When a red flash appears above her, the incoming hit cannot be parried. Evade it.

How hard Gu Wanyue’s grabs hit
Grabs account for most of the damage she deals. On Pathbreaker, two of the heavier grabs can drain most of a full health bar. Wayfarer reduces the threat, although her pressure at the start remains strong.
| Difficulty | Hit | Damage to Soul |
|---|---|---|
| Pathbreaker | Flying grab | About 683 HP, twice in one fight |
| Pathbreaker | Another grab hit | About 342 HP |
| Wayfarer | Sneak grab | About 479 HP (512 down to 33) |
| Wayfarer | Opening flurry | 1,402 to 337 HP in about 16 seconds |
That Wayfarer flurry brought Soul down to 337 HP even with healing in between.

Surviving Gu Wanyue’s fog and grabs
- Before entering the square, rest at the Pond of Fading Song bell.
- Use the brief pauses between her moves to attack. Strikes made while she is still attacking tend to miss or get interrupted.
- Take the black fog and her disappearance as a sign that a grab is about to follow.
- Heal at range, once she has completed a move.
If the damage is too much, switching to Wayfarer lowers enemy damage. Her HP stays the same. The difficulty modes can be changed to suit the fight.
Gu Wanyue’s reward: Fanatic’s Fragment: Fixation
Defeating her gives Fanatic’s Fragment: Fixation and 24,000 Remnant Dust. The fragment is a Weapon Soul Tempering Material, and its card reads:

“A fragment born of a hopeless wait. That longing had taken root in the very marrow, spreading through the bones even after the flesh had rotted away.”
Pair it with Fanatic’s Fragment: Attachment, which comes from Yan Qiansui in the tale Allure of Vanity, and the two form Fanatic’s Obsession. That is the material for The Fanatic’s Broken Blade, and it sits alongside the other soul tempering materials.
Who Gu Wanyue is
At the end of the encounter she talks about hearing a man’s voice rising from the darkness at the bottom of a well, a voice that is cold, alone and has nowhere to go. That man is Sanchuan, who lies in the well, and she says that if the two of them cannot live together, she has chosen to die alongside him. The nearby Well of Wei Sanchuan carries his name.
