Quick answer: Hardcore has not launched. Blizzard’s roadmap places it in winter, after the December 9 raids open in Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit, and Onyxia’s Lair, but before the spring major update. No specific date has been given.

WoW Forever Hardcore release window

World of Warcraft: Forever launched on 4 November 2026 at 23:00 UTC with four rulesets: Normal, PvP, Roleplay, and Roleplay-PvP. Hardcore was not one of them. Blizzard’s launch posts say it arrives “sometime after launch”, and that more details and timing will come later.

Blizzard’s roadmap says “content and timing subject to change”, meaning the winter window may shift.

Confirmed Hardcore ruleset rules

Blizzard pitches Hardcore as a ruleset for players chasing the ultimate challenge, one where every decision matters and death has lasting consequences. Here’s what is locked in so far:

  • Hardcore is its own ruleset, chosen before character creation like the other four.
  • You can’t hop between rulesets. Playing Hardcore means creating a new character there.
  • It is a fully enclosed ecosystem. Grouping, dungeons, and raids happen only with other Hardcore players.
  • Battlegrounds don’t mix Hardcore with other rulesets. The other rulesets can share battlegrounds with each other, but Hardcore stays separate.

What happens when a Hardcore character dies

A character’s death brings its Hardcore run to an end, but the character remains on your account. You can move a dead Hardcore character to a different ruleset, including PvP, and continue playing there.

Legacy Points and Collections on Hardcore: One-way only

Collections and Legacy Points are shared across rulesets at the account level, with an exception for Hardcore. Progress can pass from Hardcore to other rulesets, but not the reverse. Collections, rewards, and anything else earned in Hardcore can be accessed in other rulesets; earnings from elsewhere do not carry into Hardcore.

Legacy Challenges follow the same rule. A Legacy Challenge completed on Hardcore is granted on every other ruleset. One completed on a non-Hardcore ruleset doesn’t appear on Hardcore. Legacy Points on the normal rulesets are “available to all your non-Hardcore characters”.

Hardcore doesn’t allow completion of PvP Legacy Challenges. Instead, its launch includes 12 new Legacy Challenges made for the ruleset. Blizzard intends to add further Hardcore-specific Legacy Challenges and Legacy Perks after launch.

Hardcore rulesets and factions: What to do now

Hardcore lets you create characters for either faction. PvP differs by restricting each account to a single faction. Horde and Alliance characters still cannot form groups together in Hardcore.

A character you’re leveling in Normal, PvP, Roleplay, or Roleplay-PvP remains on its current ruleset; it can’t later be transferred into Hardcore. Starting a Hardcore run requires creating a fresh character at level 1. Legacy Points earned now won’t carry over to Hardcore.
