The Sulfur Cube is the block-eating mob from Minecraft’s Chaos Cubed drop, and one of the blocks it can swallow turns it into a walking bomb. Drop a TNT block into a large Sulfur Cube and it switches to the explosive archetype, a mobile chunk of TNT you can launch, ignite, and wire into redstone. Here is exactly how to arm one and set it off.
Quick answer: Capture a large Sulfur Cube from a Sulfur Caves biome, then feed it a TNT block by holding TNT and interacting with the cube (or dropping TNT in its path). The cube absorbs it and becomes explosive. Light it with flint and steel, fire, lava, a fire charge, or a redstone signal for a 6-second fuse.
Find and capture a Sulfur Cube first
No Sulfur Cube spawns already explosive. You start with an ordinary one and give it the archetype yourself. These mobs only appear inside Sulfur Caves, a warm-toned underground biome packed with yellow sulfur blocks, red cinnabar, and pointed sulfur spikes. They spawn in groups of two to four at light level 0, so search the darkest, unlit pockets of the cave.

Feed it TNT to get the explosive archetype

Tip: You can change your mind before lighting it. Shearing the cube pops the TNT back out as an item, and feeding it a different block swaps the archetype and ejects the old one. Once the cube is primed, though, that window closes.
How to ignite the explosive Sulfur Cube and fuse timings
A primed explosive cube works exactly like TNT, just in a mobile package. Any method that lights normal TNT will light the cube.
- Flint and steel, including from a dispenser
- Fire charges and flaming projectiles
- Redstone power
- Lava contact, which ignites it automatically
- Campfires, magma blocks, and nearby explosions
Fire resistance does not protect the cube. It still detonates from any flame source listed above. After Snapshot 6, an explosive cube can also be set off when it touches a Hot (magma block) cube, which makes for some chaotic chain setups.
The fuse length depends on how you set it off. A manual trigger gives you the full window, while a nearby blast shortens it for faster chain reactions.

When it goes off, the cube deals full TNT-level damage scaled to difficulty, then is destroyed without splitting into small cubes. It drops the now-spent TNT block. Once primed, the cube cannot be damaged, bucketed, or sheared until it detonates, and it is immune to everything except its own blast.
What explosive Sulfur Cubes are good for
Because you can launch a cube by hitting it and then ignite it remotely, the explosive variant doubles as a mobile demolition tool. Strike it with a weapon to send it flying like a ball, then light it with a flame arrow or redstone once it lands where you want.
- Wire cubes into dispensers or hidden redstone traps to defend a base on PvP servers
- Leash a cluster of primed cubes to a flying Happy Ghast and drop them onto a target from above
- Chain detonations together using the short nearby-explosion fuse for automated TNT cannons
The explosive archetype respects the TNT Explodes and Mob Griefing game rules. Turning off TNT Explodes prevents detonation entirely without consuming your ignition item, which makes it easy to test rigs safely before going live.

Chaos Cubed is still in testing, so Sulfur Caves and Sulfur Cubes will not generate unless you opt in. On Java Edition, run the matching snapshot with the experimental data pack enabled.
