How to Counter Groot in Marvel Rivals (Best Heroes and Tactics)

Break his walls with sustained damage and pick mobile, long-range heroes that ignore his crowd control.

Groot wins fights by controlling space. He is a Vanguard with a 700 health pool, mid-range vine attacks, and a set of walls that block sightlines, cut your team in half, and feed his ultimate. Beating him is less about out-dueling him and more about denying his walls and refusing to get trapped by his crowd control.

Quick answer: Pick heroes with consistent high damage to break his Thornlash and Ironwood walls on sight, and bring mobile or long-range characters who can shoot over walls and slip out of his Strangling Prison ultimate.

Why Groot’s walls are the real target

Groot’s entire game plan runs through his walls. The Thornlash Wall deploys quickly and, when Awakened near Groot, strikes enemies that he and his allies are already hitting. He can keep up to three Thornlash Walls active at once. The Ironwood Wall is the durable defensive barrier, and only one can exist at a time. When it Awakens, dealing damage near it gives Groot bonus health.

His ultimate, Strangling Prison, fires a vine cluster that pulls nearby enemies to the center and locks them in place so they cannot move or attack. Groot players often leave walls standing as a backboard, then drop the ultimate to trap your team against them. Take the walls down and most of that setup collapses.

His weaknesses make this approach reliable. Groot has low mobility, leans heavily on his walls, and is himself vulnerable to crowd control. The moment his barriers are gone, he is a slow target with few escape options.

Best heroes to counter Groot

The strongest answers fall into two buckets. Some heroes simply out-damage his walls faster than he can replace them. Others ignore his control entirely with mobility, long range, or shots that bypass barriers. The picks below cover both.

HeroCounter strengthWhy it works against Groot
Punisher (with Rocket team-up)HardestThe assault rifle chews through walls, and the shotgun can one-shot small walls while Groot is usually in range. The turret breaks two close walls at once, and his ultimate can wipe them instantly.
Squirrel GirlHardHigh sustained damage down the main lane breaks walls while she is already pressuring the front.
Winter Soldier (with Rocket team-up)MediumRocket’s attack-speed boost pushes his damage output high enough to tear walls down quickly.
Rocket RaccoonMediumStrong close-range damage plus a damage-boost ultimate that speeds up wall destruction for the team.
Star-LordMediumSurprisingly efficient at breaking walls thanks to a large, fast-firing magazine.
StormMediumArea-of-effect damage erases walls fast, her wind can push Groot away, and her allied damage boost adds pressure.
PsylockeMediumClose-range burst from multiple projectiles per shot adds up against barriers.
Iron ManMediumMobility and long range keep him out of Strangling Prison, and he can fire over walls. His Unibeam puts out heavy damage.
Scarlet WitchCounter pickTeleportation and ranged magic bypass his defenses, and her crowd control can interrupt Strangling Prison.
LokiSoftCan phase through walls and bait wasted abilities; three clones firing down the lane add wall damage.
VenomSoftConsistent multi-tentacle damage and easy escapes let him bully Groot when isolated.

How to play against Groot in a match

Commit to breaking walls. The most common reason teams lose to Groot is that one player shoots the walls while everyone else ignores them. Focus fire a wall together and it falls in moments.
Refuse the Ironwood backboard. Do not stand or fight beside a freshly placed Ironwood Wall, because damage near an Awakened wall heals Groot. Reposition so the wall is working for nobody.
Stay spread out for Strangling Prison. The ultimate pulls grouped enemies into one spot, so clustering near walls or in tight corridors makes the trap easy to land. Keep spacing, especially supports and fast damage dealers, and the pull catches fewer targets.
Punish his low mobility. Once the walls are down, Groot cannot reposition quickly. Dive him with Wolverine, dash over barriers with Empowered Thor, or burst him from range before he rebuilds his setup.

Heroes that struggle against Groot

Some picks are weak into Groot because their damage either ignores walls poorly or cannot reach him through them. If you are on these heroes, expect to swap or rely on teammates for wall destruction.

  • Moon Knight, whose attacks do not bounce off the walls.
  • Namor, whose squids will not target the walls.
  • Hawkeye, who deals low damage without his charged hawk shot.
  • Thing, who lacks an escape after committing past a wall.
  • Cloak & Dagger, whose daggers do low projectile damage, though bouncing shots near walls can help.

The pattern that beats Groot is simple to verify in a match. If his walls are dropping as fast as he places them and your backline keeps spacing during Strangling Prison, his control evaporates and he is left as a slow, isolated Vanguard. Coordinate the wall breaks, hold your spacing, and Groot loses the one thing that makes him strong.
