How to Get and Evolve Drill Hero (Simon) in Universal Tower Defense Z

Farm the Beast Desert Legend stage, meet the evolution costs, and turn Drill Hero into Drill Hero (Spiral) with its Drill Mech summon.

Farm the Beast Desert Legend stage, meet the evolution costs, and turn Drill Hero into Drill Hero (Spiral) with its Drill Mech summon.

Drill Hero arrived with Update 4.0 in Universal Tower Defense Z as a Secret-rarity unit modeled after Simon from Gurren Lagann. It plays differently from most damage dealers because it never attacks on its own. Instead, it summons a Drill Mech on the nearest path, and that machine carries the range and damage that make the unit useful across every mode.

Quick answer: Complete every chapter of the Beast Desert Story mode to unlock the Beast Desert Legend stage, then clear Act 3 of that Legend stage. Drill Hero drops with a 7.25% chance per clear and is guaranteed at 30 completions.

Where to farm Drill Hero in Universal Tower Defense Z

Drill Hero is a reward from Act 3 of the Beast Desert Legend stage. The Legend stage only opens after you finish every chapter of the Beast Desert Story mode, so clear the campaign first if the Legend entry is still locked.

Each clear of Act 3 gives a 7.25% chance to drop Drill Hero. A pity meter runs alongside that roll, and it guarantees the unit once you reach 30 completions. The same act also drops an Unrivaled Fragment used for evolving Visionary, so repeat runs here serve more than one goal.

Evolution requirements for Drill Hero (Spiral)

Once you own Drill Hero, you can turn it into Drill Hero (Spiral) through the Evolutions menu. Select the unit, gather the materials below, and press the “Evolve!” button.

MaterialAmount
Universal Fragment4
Burning Fragment8
Holy Fragment12
Starry Glasses1
Gold25,000

Fragments of every type drop from Challenges. You can also buy them with Gold from the Merchant or with Virtual Tokens from the Virtual Merchant’s shop, which helps when a specific fragment refuses to drop.

Starry Glasses is the tighter requirement. It has a 14.5% drop rate in Act 3 of the Beast Desert Legend stage, the same act that gives Drill Hero, and its pity kicks in at 15 completions. Farming the unit and its evolution item at the same location saves runs.

How Drill Hero (Spiral) works on the field

Drill Hero (Spiral) carries one passive called Spiral Core. The unit itself never deals damage. Every time you deploy it, it summons a Drill Mech on the nearest path, and that mech does the actual work. Click the Drill Mech to open its stats and passives.

You can place one Drill Mech per Drill Hero deployment. After the mech spawns, both the Drill Hero and its Drill Mech can be upgraded separately with in-match cash, and upgrading the hero raises the mech’s stats.

Drill Mech passives

The Drill Mech scales through a charge system tied to takedowns. As charge climbs, it unlocks new attacks and stronger buffs.

TriggerEffect
On Takedown+1% Charge
On Attack+2% Elemental Damage (cap +20%), +5% AoE size (cap +35%)
25% ChargeGains the Brute attack
50% ChargeTakedowns grant +5% Charge; unlocks an ability to switch between Brute and Stylish
Brute Attack+25% Hyper Armor Damage
Stylish AttackGains Hybrid targeting
75% ChargeOn hit +5% Critical Rate; a Critical Hit resets that buff
100% ChargeUse “Control” to pilot the mech for 120s; every 180s enters Overpower Mode for 30s with +50% True Damage

A second passive, Brotherly Force, rewards clustering. For every non-support, non-farm unit inside the Drill Mech’s range, it gains -5% SPA, capped at -20%. Pairing the mech with active damage dealers speeds up its attacks.

Spawn cost and the best trait

Drill Hero costs 4,000 Yen to place. The Drill Mech it summons costs nothing extra to deploy, so the whole 4,000 buys both the hero and its machine.

Sacred is the strongest trait for Drill Hero because it cuts that high spawn cost by a large margin, letting you field the unit far earlier in a run. Ruler is the alternative when you want raw output, since it adds Damage and Range along with its other bonuses.
