Echoes of Aincrad does not lock you into a warrior, mage, or rogue at the start. For the first time in the Sword Art Online series, you make your own avatar as one of the 10,000 players trapped in the floating castle, and your “class” is something you assemble rather than pick from a menu. Your role is defined by how you spend stats, which weapon you carry, and which AI partner fights beside you.

Quick answer: There is no traditional class system. Build your character by allocating five attributes, choosing one of the game’s weapon types, and pairing with an AI partner whose support skills round out your kit. You can respec your approach by changing gear, stats, and partner tactics as you level.

Stats replace classes in Echoes of Aincrad

Instead of a class label, your identity is a spread of five attributes. You steer that spread toward speed, intelligence, or endurance depending on the playstyle you want. Lean into speed for fast, mobile fighters; push endurance for a durable frontline character; or invest in intelligence for a build that leans on abilities. Every level-up gives you more to allocate, and growth is the core of survival as floors get harder.

Because the role lives in your stats and gear rather than a locked archetype, you can reshape your character over time. Swapping equipment, adjusting your attribute focus, and unlocking new abilities all change how your hero performs without starting over.

Weapon types decide your combat style

The closest thing to a class in Echoes of Aincrad is your weapon. Combat is real-time and built around managing HP, Stamina, and SP, with sword skills, parries, and perfect dodges layered on top. The weapon you main determines your range, attack speed, and which skills you can chain together.

Additional types such as spear, katana, and bow also appear in the weapon lineup, along with shield combat for players who want extra defense. The pre-order Proto-Elucidator weapon pack covers six weapon types plus a shield, giving an early-game edge across several of these styles.

Note: You are not tied to a single weapon forever. Towns act as your base for upgrading weapons, buying consumables, and enhancing stats, so you can experiment with different combat styles as you progress.


The partner system fills your second role

Since the game is single-player with no live co-op or PvP, your AI partner covers the gaps in your build. You bring one companion into quests, each with unique support skills, and you can adapt their tactics and gear to complement your own stats. A durable frontline hero might pair with a partner who deals damage, while a fast striker can lean on a partner for support.

The confirmed companions include Iori, Argo, Wyzeman, Zash, Saayu, Stina, and Musoh. Choosing the right partner and building synergy with them is a core part of how your effective “class” comes together.

Difficulty and Death Game Mode change the stakes

Your build choices matter more depending on the difficulty you play on. There are four difficulty levels, ranging from Story to Very Hard. On top of any of them, you can enable the optional Death Game Mode, which deletes your save file permanently if your character dies. That mode raises the pressure on stat allocation, weapon mastery, and partner support, since a single mistake can end the run.

Death Game Mode can be unlocked early through the Deluxe and Ultimate Editions, while the standard game keeps it as a later unlock.
