Devil Trigger in VV Ultimatum: Dante and Vergil Duo Progression Explained

How the demonic transformation activates, drains, and heals for both brothers as they fight side by side.

How the demonic transformation activates, drains, and heals for both brothers as they fight side by side.

Devil Trigger is the transformation that carries the heavier fights in the Dante and Vergil duo run through VV Ultimatum. It turns each brother into a demonic form that hits harder, moves faster, and slowly restores health, but only while a gauge of runes drains beneath the vitality bar. Knowing when it fires and what feeds it is the difference between clearing a mission and getting stuck in a combo you cannot escape.

Quick answer: Fill at least three runes of the Devil Trigger gauge, then activate to transform. The form raises strength and speed, heals you on its own, and ends the moment the gauge empties, or you cancel it.

What Devil Trigger does in VV Ultimatum

Devil Trigger, shortened to DT, is a power that demons and hybrids use to release their inner potential. When it activates, the character shifts into a demonic form, and both physical and magical stats rise. The user moves quicker, deals more damage, and keeps recovering vitality for as long as the form holds. The voice deepens and distorts, and depending on the equipped weapon, characters can gain extra options such as hovering or flight.

The transformation is not the only use for the meter. DT energy can also be spent on attacks without staying in demon form. Dante can create sword formations from it, and Vergil can conjure a large batch of Summoned Swords at once. Each of those moves drains part of the gauge, so the same resource powers both the form and its special strikes.

How the Devil Trigger gauge fills and drains

The gauge is a bank of demonic energy that sits below the vitality bar and appears as a row of runes. You start with the three runes needed for a transformation, and the meter can be extended over time so the form lasts longer. Three lit runes is the hard minimum. Drop below that and the transformation will not trigger at all.

A few enemies can drain the meter directly, so it is not always under your control. Manually switching the form off can also cost a rune, which matters when you are timing activations during a duo run and want a rune to spare for the next fight.

Dante’s Devil Trigger and Double Trigger

Dante’s transformation boosts his speed, strength, and damage while it steadily heals him. The exact perks depend on his weapon, and certain Devil Arms grant the ability to hover in the air. In the duo run, he pushes this further with a stronger state he calls “Double Trigger,” shifting into a winged, white-armored form that opens new attack options beyond the standard DT. In that form, he can summon spectral wolves and land heavy claw strikes before reverting.

The higher-tier version follows the same rule as the base form. It runs on the gauge, heals while active, and ends when the runes run out. Even against a tough enemy like the Arctic Hermit, Double Trigger is not always required if you can chain openings, but it clears crowded rooms quickly when you are surrounded.

Vergil’s Devil Trigger and the Doppelganger

Vergil gains the same core benefits from DT: more power, more speed, and health regeneration, but his standout trick is a spectral copy of himself. His signature version replaces the ordinary transformation with a Doppelganger, a summoned duplicate that mirrors his attacks while wielding the Yamato. That copy gives him two threats at once and lets him keep pressure on an enemy even when his own body is out of reach.

For a run where both brothers fight together, the clone effectively turns the pair into three attackers on screen. Vergil leans on this while Dante works the opposite flank, which is how the duo covers split objectives during interception missions without either brother getting overwhelmed.

How to confirm Devil Trigger is active

The change is immediate to see and hear. The character takes on a demonic form or aura, the voice drops and distorts, and the gauge starts ticking down one rune at a time. The clearest confirmation is your health bar climbing on its own, since regeneration only runs while the form is active. When the gauge empties or you cancel out, the character reverts and the healing stops.

If the transformation refuses to fire, the reason is almost always a gauge below three runes. Build it back up by attacking enemies, taunting, or grabbing a Devil Star, then try again once at least three runes are lit. Keeping the meter topped up between fights is what lets both Dante and Vergil rely on their demonic forms through the harder stretches of the progression.
