Game Freak’s action RPG Beast of Reincarnation is a hard turn away from Pokémon. It puts you in control of Emma, an outcast branded a Blighted One, and Koo, her canine partner, as they cut through a ruined version of Japan overrun by monstrous, plant-fused beasts. Hands-on impressions have now filled in the two things most buyers want to nail down before launch, namely how long the campaign runs and how the fighting actually plays.
Quick answer: The main story takes roughly 30 to 40 hours. The game launches August 4, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and it is on Xbox Game Pass from day one.

How long the main story takes
Wrapping up the main story runs about 30 to 40 hours, with extra time on top if you want to finish everything else. That places it in the same range as recent action hits like Stellar Blade, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Ghost of Yōtei, and Final Fantasy XVI. It also sits close to Game Freak’s own output, since its recent Pokémon games tend to land around the same mark.
| Game | Approx. main story |
|---|---|
| Beast of Reincarnation | 30–40 hours |
| Pokémon Legends: Z-A | ~28 hours |
| Pokémon Pokopia | ~36 hours |

Fighting blends real-time action with turn-based tactics. Most of it flows through Emma’s swordplay, while Koo attacks on his own. The twist is that you can slow time to issue command-based moves through Koo, a rhythm that feels a lot like the Active Time Battle menu in Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Parrying is the core of the system. A well-timed parry blocks the damage completely and fills the FP meter used for special Bloom Arts. Trigger one of those and time slows down, letting you read the fight and pick an ability, such as Higanbana’s immobilizing roots. The parry window is more forgiving than Sekiro’s, so the game leans toward snappy, readable combat rather than the punishing tightness people associate with Souls titles.

Enemies carry two meters, a health bar and a stun gauge. Fill the stun gauge and you unlock a powerful finishing move. Beating a boss lets Emma absorb its power, which awakens new techniques in Koo. You spend earned SP across a branching skill tree to learn attacks and grow your combos, with named abilities such as Sakura Javelin and Helm Splitter. You can also lean into ranged, stealthy, or aggressive loadouts using gear and spirit stones.
Traversal and campfire upgrades
Getting around uses one of the game’s stranger ideas. Emma’s hair extends into tree roots to help you move through the open zones. It works as a grappling hook, gives you a boosted second jump, and can even stretch into a long platform to cross wide gaps, along with a fast-travel function. Campfires act as your rest and upgrade points, where you unlock new abilities and catch your breath between the giant boss encounters.
Setting, tone, and cast
The world is a post-apocalyptic Japan set in the year 4026, corrupted by a parasitic blight and prowled by fused animal-plant creatures. Emma and Koo travel east to west, taking on the bosses that rule each region and capturing their powers, all with the goal of defeating the Beast of Reincarnation itself. Their bond strengthens as they push deeper, and new powers bloom along the way.
Visually and thematically it pulls from several places. Previewers describe heavy NieR: Automata vibes wrapped in a Princess Mononoke-style fantasy look, with thematic threads drawn from Blade Runner. The project has been in development for roughly five to six years, a real departure from Game Freak’s Pokémon work. Yui Ishikawa voices Emma, joined by a cast that includes Akio Ōtsuka, Sumire Morohoshi, Akira Ishida, and Rina Satō.

Taken together, the previews point to a focused, roughly 30-to-40-hour action RPG that keeps the technical, parry-heavy combat of a Souls-adjacent game while easing the difficulty enough to stay approachable. For a studio best known for Pokémon, it is a clear swing at something darker and more mature, and the wait to see it in full is short.
