Blox Fruits: How to Get the Lightning Bolt for the Mad Scientist

Break a flashing storm cloud above Skylands, hand the material over, and unlock the Electric fighting style.

Break a flashing storm cloud above Skylands, hand the material over, and unlock the Electric fighting style.

The Lightning Bolt is a Rare material in Blox Fruits, and it exists for exactly one reason: the Mad Scientist will not sell you the Electric fighting style until you bring him one. Its inventory text spells out both the source and the buyer — “Raw current pulled out of a charged storm cloud. The Mad Scientist wants one.”

Quick answer: Talk to the Mad Scientist below Skylands and pick “I’ll get you one,” then fly up and break one of the light-gray clouds that has lightning visibly flickering inside it. The Lightning Bolt drops on the spot, and returning it opens the $500,000 purchase for Electric.

Lightning Bolt: What it is and what it unlocks

This is not a fruit, a sword, or a tradeable drop you farm in bulk. It is a single quest material tied to one NPC and one purchase.

Electric is a permanent purchase once you pay for it. Swapping to another fighting style later does not delete it, and you can relearn it from the Mad Scientist for free.

Where to find the Mad Scientist and take the task

Head to Skylands in the First Sea and drop down to the lowest island rather than the upper platforms. The Mad Scientist tucks himself behind one of the rocks there, so you may need to circle the island before he appears.
Walk into the green ring around him and open the dialogue. He talks up his years of research into Electric, then makes his terms clear before any money changes hands.

Choose I’ll get you one. The other options, Walk Away and Nevermind, back out without starting anything.
Check for the on-screen confirmation reading “Took the Mad Scientist’s task. Bring back a Lightning Bolt.” That line is your proof the quest is live. He also repeats the key hint — look for clouds with lightning flickering inside them, because the dull ones are useless.

Note: the Mad Scientist also stands next to the volcano at Hot and Cold in the Second Sea and at Castle on the Sea in the Third Sea, alongside the other fighting style teachers.

How to get a Lightning Bolt from Skylands storm clouds

Fly or climb up into the sky around the Skylands islands and start scanning the cloud layer. You are looking for light-gray, darker-toned clouds rather than the flat white scenery clouds.

Watch each cloud for a second or two before committing. A charged one visibly flashes, with lightning sparking inside the body of the cloud. Clouds that sit still with no flicker will never drop anything, so ignore them and keep moving.

Get right up to the flashing cloud and attack it until it breaks apart. Any equipped weapon works — a sword such as the Dark Blade, a gun, or your current fighting style.

Look for the message “Caught a lightning bolt! Take it to the Mad Scientist.” The Lightning Bolt is now sitting in your inventory under the Rare tab, and you can confirm it there before flying back down.

Hand over the Lightning Bolt and buy Electric for $500,000

Return to the lowest Skylands island and talk to the Mad Scientist again with the material in hand. The dialogue now offers Hand it over, which consumes the Lightning Bolt and awards experience.

Once the delivery is done, the shop swaps to a Pay $500,000 option for Electric. You know it worked when that price button appears in place of the fetch request. If you do not have the cash yet, the purchase stays available for whenever you come back — you only need to do the cloud run once.

Why the Lightning Bolt is not dropping

Almost every failed run comes down to the same mistake: hitting a cloud that was never charged. If nothing drops when the cloud breaks, it was one of the dull ones. Back off, watch the sky for a flicker, and go for that one instead.

There is also one known bug worth knowing about. The First Sea Mad Scientist can break for players who travelled through a portal, showing “[Not Enough Money.]” no matter how much you are carrying. Rejoining the server or using one of his Second or Third Sea locations gets around it.

The whole loop takes a couple of minutes if the sky cooperates, and the payoff is a permanent fighting style you can swap back to at any time. Grab the Lightning Bolt first, then worry about scraping together the $500,000.
