In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ, keeping your gear depends on escaping Hajin. A squad wipe before extraction leaves the deployment with “FAILED TO EXFIL” and your operator labeled “MISSING IN ACTION”; only items in secure slots return. Escape successfully and you’ll see an EXTRACTION SUCCESSFUL screen, followed by an EXTRACTION SUMMARY of what you banked and extracted. Put the item you want to keep into a secure slot immediately after picking it up.
Quick answer: Go to a green-smoke exfil site, use CALL EXFIL HELICOPTER, hold until it lands, then board before the roughly 35-second EXFIL DEPARTING timer ends. For a Fulton, use ACTIVATE FULTON on the crate.
Hajin gives you three ways out: the helicopter exfil (Heli), the Fulton lift and the Flare. Those three are the exits described below, not a complete list of what DMZ offers.
How to call the exfil helicopter in DMZ
Helicopter exfil sites are marked in the world by green smoke, which is already rising by the time you get there. Calling the helicopter does not fire a flare; the green smoke is the marker.
You can still fire from the exposed ramp once the helicopter is airborne. The EXTRACTION SUCCESSFUL message appears when the helicopter departs with you aboard.
How to use a Fulton crate to exfil
A Fulton is a green crate stenciled “ATTENTION / AIR TRNSP” with yellow hazard stripes. There is one on the roof of the NuriGO Mall, which serves as the exfil for the Shopping Hacks story mission. You reach that roof with an ascender cable and a ladder.
The EXTRACTION SUCCESSFUL screen follows the lift.
The Flare exfil gives away your position
A flare gets fired into the sky. It is loud and visible from across the map, so any squad in the area knows exactly where you plan to leave from. Factor that in before you commit to it.
Story mission exfils: When the game sends a chopper
For some story missions, the game dispatches an exfil helicopter after the final objective appears. Other missions show MISSION COMPLETE and require you to locate an exit yourself.

In Silent Ledger, the chopper objective appears when you leave the Heavenly Luck Casino, along with the “EXFIL HELICOPTER INBOUND” banner. Boarding shows MISSION COMPLETE / STORY MISSION and starts the EXFIL DEPARTING countdown. In Iron Citadel, capturing the SAM site switches the objective and triggers MILBASE ALARM: ACTIVE, so expect company while you wait for the helicopter. For Grid Assault and Fallen Ember, use the helicopter call described above.
How to avoid exfil campers in DMZ
Exfil sites pull in other squads hoping to catch players leaving with full bags. Assume any site could be an ambush and plan around that.
- Before you head for the exfil, check your bag, your route and a backup exit.
- Mark a second exfil on the tac-map with a ping so the squad can see the fallback location. If the first site is contested, head to the alternate.
- Split roles: one player calls the exfil while the others cover the approaches until the helicopter lands.
- A machine gun set on a mount or bipod is useful for covering exposed approaches while you wait.
- Wait until you’ve reached cover and replaced your plates after a fight before calling for exfil.
Monitor the HUD’s RADIATION COUNTDOWN. Radiation shuts down the map when the timer expires, so allow enough time to get to your backup exit if the first one fails.

Approaching an exfil while in Last Stand calls the exfil automatically. Also grants infinite bleed out time while in Last Stand.
