Crimson Desert — How to Lift Demeniss Hostility and Explore Freely

Demeniss is the central region of Pywel in Crimson Desert, and it is also the one place that will make your life miserable if you wander in too early. Every soldier in the capital city and the surrounding countryside treats you as an enemy the moment you're spotted. Vendors refuse to deal with you, patrols swarm you on the roads, and even switching to Damiane won't help — the guards hit just as hard regardless of which character you're controlling. This isn't a bug. It's baked into the narrative.

Quick answer: Progress through the main story until Chapter 8 and defeat Lucien Bastier (including his Awakened phase) during the "Traitor" subquest in the Blood Coronation questline. Once he falls, Demeniss hostility is permanently removed, and you can explore, shop, and fast-travel freely.

Why Demeniss Is Hostile in the First Place

Caliburn and his followers have seized control of the region, diverting power away from Countess Azerian. The story frames Demeniss as occupied territory, so every patrol — particularly the yellow-clad soldiers in the southern half of the region — will attack on sight. The northern section near Anvil Hill has guards in red outfits who are generally non-hostile, which is why the brief Chapter 5 visit through the north feels uneventful. But the capital city and the southern countryside remain locked down until the story resolves the conflict.

Defeating Lucien Bastier in Chapter 8

Chapter 8 brings you back to Demeniss as part of the Blood Coronation questline. During a subquest called Traitor, you fight Lucien Bastier — a mace-wielding warrior — while playing as Damiane. The fight has two phases.

Step 1: Deplete Lucien's first health bar. He fights aggressively with wide mace swings, but standard dodge-and-punish tactics work well here. Keep Damiane's gear upgraded beforehand, because an under-leveled Damiane will struggle.

Step 2: After his health reaches zero, Lucien enters an Awakened form. He becomes significantly faster and gains a teleport ability, warping close to you and immediately following up with combo attacks. Stay mobile, dodge the teleport-into-swing pattern, and punish during his recovery frames.

Step 3: Once Awakened Lucien Bastier is defeated, the quest completes. A short cutscene plays, and Demeniss is liberated. From this point on, all patrols stand down, vendors open for business, and you can roam the entire region without being attacked.

⚠️
Make sure Damiane's equipment is in good shape before starting Chapter 8. The Lucien fight is one of the tougher boss encounters, and you cannot switch to Kliff mid-fight.

How to Survive Demeniss Before Chapter 8

If you want to explore the region before finishing the story, there are a few ways to reduce friction — though none of them fully eliminate the danger.

Wear the Civilian Disguise

The Civilian Disguise is sold at Back Alley Shops scattered throughout the game world. Equipping it makes enemies slower to detect you, but it does not make you invisible. Getting too close to a patrol or performing sudden movements (sprinting, jumping, drawing a weapon) will still alert soldiers. Think of it as a stealth aid rather than a free pass. Note that disguises only work with their associated factions — generic disguises from random merchants won't fool Demeniss soldiers specifically.

Ring the Demeniss Bell Tower Early

Even while the region is hostile, you can sneak into Demeniss City and ring the bell in the southern bell tower. Doing so reveals the Demeniss map and unlocks a fast-travel point, which is extremely useful once the region opens up later. To reach the tower without getting overwhelmed, stick to the rooftops and avoid ground-level patrols. Ringing the bell does not remove hostility — soldiers will still attack you on the way out — but it saves you a return trip later.

💡
Ringing bell towers early is safe and won't cause any quest bugs. You can ring every bell tower in the game before reaching the associated story chapter without breaking anything.

Northern vs. Southern Demeniss — A Key Distinction

Not all of Demeniss is equally dangerous before Chapter 8. The southern half is where the dense, yellow-uniformed hostile patrols congregate. The northern area, accessible from Anvil Hill, has red-uniformed Demeniss guards who are non-hostile. If a Chapter 5 quest waypoint sends you into Demeniss, approach from the north to avoid unnecessary combat. The southern side quests, on the other hand, are best saved until after the region is liberated.

Can You Farm Hostile Soldiers for XP?

There is no penalty for killing hostile Demeniss soldiers before the story clears the region. They attack first, so the game treats every encounter as self-defense. Crimson Desert does not have a traditional experience-point system with character levels, but there is a progression bar visible to the left of the map screen. Filling it awards an Abyss Artifact. Farming patrols can contribute to that bar, though it is not an efficient grind compared to other activities.

Full Liberation After Completing the Main Story

Defeating Lucien Bastier in Chapter 8 removes the hostility for the capital and most of the region. However, for the entire Demeniss countryside to be fully pacified — with every last patrol gone — you need to complete all 12 chapters of the main story. The narrative reason ties back to Caliburn's broader hold on the region. Once the story wraps up, Demeniss is completely liberated and functions like any other peaceful zone in Pywel.

Demeniss is one of the richest areas in Crimson Desert, filled with massive castles, ancient ruins, and lush fields worth exploring. The hostility can feel frustrating early on, but it's a deliberate story beat rather than a design oversight. Push through Chapter 8, take down Lucien Bastier, and the entire region opens up for you to enjoy at your own pace.
