The In the Jungle expansion moves Dave away from the Blue Hole and into Utara, a freshwater village built around a jungle lake. The people living there sit at the center of the daily loop, and raising your friendship with each one earns gifts that range from house decorations to combat charms, shop discounts, and daily item collection. Most residents hand over one reward at three hearts and a second at four hearts.
Quick answer: Fill a villager to three hearts and four hearts, then talk to them when a pink question mark appears above their head to claim the gift. Adult villagers also start visiting Bancho Grill once they reach two hearts.

Add to Google Preferences →How hearts and friendship levels work
Friendship with every villager is tracked in hearts, with a maximum of four per person. The first heart fills the moment you meet someone, so you earn the remaining three through interaction. The reward milestones land at three and four hearts.
Two hearts matters too. Once an adult villager reaches that level, they start showing up at Bancho Grill in the evening as a paying customer, where you can serve them food and keep raising affinity at the same time.
Note: Some villagers show a locked heart that blocks further progress. That usually means a related quest is still pending, so check for an open mission tied to that character before assuming you are stuck.
How to raise friendship faster
Several actions push affinity upward, but a few do the heavy lifting. Feeding a villager their favorite food at Bancho Grill is one of the quickest methods, alongside giving gifts they like and completing their friendship missions.
To hand over a present, talk to a villager and pick the Gift option, then choose an item from your inventory. A heart icon sits next to anything they consider a favorite. You can only give one gift per villager per day, so save the favorites for the people you want to level up first.
You learn likes and dislikes by talking to villagers directly. You can also ask them outright about their favorite items. Until you have that conversation, their preferences stay hidden in the Resident Note menu.
How to check friendship levels and claim rewards
Best friendship rewards to prioritize
You cannot always chase rewards in a strict order, since progress depends on available events, sub missions, gifts, and favorite foods. Even so, some payoffs help far more than others. The strongest ones cut upgrade costs, automate gathering, speed up travel, or make diving easier. Setah Forest combat accessories are handy, but fights in that area are manageable without grinding every battle charm.
| Villager | Reward | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Perak | Blacksmith Discount | 20% off smithing at three hearts and 50% off at four, lowering tool upgrade costs. |
| Marone | Material Collection | Collects materials and ingredients daily from three hearts, with rarer hauls at four. |
| Bima | Material Collection | Gathers materials and ingredients every day once you reach four hearts. |
| Eka | Creature Collection | Brings in creatures for Dave every day at four hearts. |
| Rimbo | Electric Scooter | Travels faster than the base Kick Scooter, especially on the beach. |
| Harta | Gold Necklace of Sloth | Slows nearby fish, making captures and underwater fights easier. |
| Bonita | Air Resonance Necklace | Adds 30% oxygen recovery, useful on longer or tougher dives. |
None of these rewards are required to finish the main story, so treat them as quality-of-life boosts rather than gates. That said, the discount, collection, and travel rewards pay for themselves quickly, which makes the villagers tied to them worth befriending early. Keep a stock of favorite foods and gifts on hand, knock out friendship missions as they appear, and the hearts fill in naturally as you settle into life in Utara.
