Merchant Ship title card for Final Fantasy Resonance

The Merchant Ship in Final Fantasy Resonance is a shop that travels the sea and only trades with airships, so you find it by flying your airship over the ocean. It sells five rare items, and which ones you can buy depends on your chapter. Chapter 6 opens up the first two, Chapter 7 adds two more, and Chapter 8 adds the last one.

Quick answer: Fly the airship over the sea and talk to the Merchant Ship. Its stock opens in Chapters 6, 7 and 8, and buying all five items costs 230,000 Gil.

How to find the Merchant Ship

The game hints at the ship on the bulletin board. A news piece titled “A Merchant Ship, A Chance Encounter” describes a trader who “hauls his wares across the seas, never stopping in any port, and only trading with any airships he runs into along the way”. His goods are only what he has picked up on his travels, “yet each one is a treasure”. The piece closes by telling anyone who owns an airship to keep their eyes peeled.

A resident of Gaberada, the Undertown, fills in the rest. They mention “a very particular merchant ship that sails the seas, appearing only when they have acquired some rare oddity to sell”, and add: “It’s rumored that they cater to airship travelers. So if you’re flying above the seas, one of the ships you spot might belong to them.”

Take your airship out over the ocean. The ship never docks at a port, so you won’t find it on foot or in town.
Watch the water for ships as you fly. Head toward each one you spot until you reach the trader.
Interact when the prompt reads “Talk to Merchant Ship”. The merchant greets you with “Ahoy, matey! Lucky ye found us on the high seas—or perhaps the sea willed our meetin’!” and then “We’ll be sailin’ n’ sellin’ but one shiny trinket, yet it be the finest treasure ye ever lay eyes on!”
Listen to the item pitch and choose Buy or Pass. Each item gets its own line, such as “Behold, adamantite! Yers for 35,000 gil!”

A finished sale ends with “Sold! Ye won’t regret this purchase—I guarantee it!” If you’re short on Gil, he turns you away with “Avast! Ye don’t have enough gil! I like ye, but I can’t let ye haggle with me.”

Everything the Merchant Ship sells

Of the five items, three are Valuables used for crafting, awakening Visions or upgrading the radar, and two are Ancient equipment pieces.

The five items the Merchant Ship sells, with the price and the chapter each one appears.

  • Ancient Cloak: Available in Chapter 6 for 40,000 Gil. This robe is armor and one of the 12 Ancient pieces; its resale price is 10,000 Gil.
  • Ancient Tome: Available in Chapter 7 for 45,000 Gil. This grimoire is a weapon and one of the 12 Ancient pieces; its resale price is 11,250 Gil.
  • Magicite Cryst: 50,000 Gil, from Chapter 7. “A magicite cryst imbued with the power of the Farplane. Has the power to awaken visions.” (Valuable)
  • High-Power Generator: Chapter 8; costs 60,000 Gil. “A device that increases radar output. Can be used to upgrade the Mysidia Radar.” (Valuable)

The Ancient Tome and the Ancient Cloak share the same in-game hint, which points straight at the ship: “Passed among merchants of the sea, its current location is unknown, but you may yet happen upon it.”

Which Merchant Ship items are worth buying

There is no other way to obtain the Ancient Cloak, Ancient Tome or High-Power Generator; the ship is their sole source. The two Ancient pieces are part of the complete set of 12 Ancient equipment pieces, and the generator appears on the key items list. It also improves the Mysidia Radar, allowing it to locate additional hidden treasure.

Adamantite and the Magicite Cryst can be skipped if your Gil is tight, because you can get both of them elsewhere. Adamantite also comes from a chest, the Tablet Shard collector, Colosseum Rank Battles and a Mysidia Radar treasure, all covered in where to get Adamantite. Magicite Cryst also turns up in chests, side quests, the Colosseum, the Tablet Shard collector and a radar treasure, covered in where to get Magicite.
