Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave – How to Use Items and Potions to Heal

Healing during combat in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave trips up a lot of players early because the tutorial glosses over one key detail. Pressing Y opens your inventory, but it will not let you actually drink a Vulnerary from there. The button you need is tied to the movement command, not the inventory preview.

After moving the unit, the Items command opens an inventory containing Wooden Spear and Vulnerary. Shown at 00:45 in AlphaZin’s video.

Quick answer: Move your unit first, then pick Items from the action menu, choose your Vulnerary, press A, and select Use to restore 20 HP.

Why pressing Y will not heal your unit

Pressing Y at the start of your turn opens the Items list, and this is where most players get stuck. That view is for reading your inventory, not for acting on it. You can highlight a Vulnerary, but no button will let you consume it while the list is open this way.

The Y menu still has a purpose. Use it to check weapon durability, such as a Wooden Spear sitting at 10/10, and to see how many Vulneraries you have left before you commit to a turn. Think of it as a planning screen rather than an action screen.

Use a Vulnerary to heal in combat

Select the unit you want to heal, then move it to a tile, even if you keep it in place. Confirming a position is what brings up the character’s action menu.
From the list of options that appears beside your unit, choose Items. This opens the inventory in its usable state, unlike the Y preview.
Highlight the Vulnerary, press A, then pick Use. The unit drinks the potion and recovers 20 HP, and a Vulnerary carries three uses before it runs out.

You know it worked when your unit’s HP bar climbs by 20 and the Vulnerary’s remaining count drops by one, for example from 3/3 to 2/3.

As you progress, your inventory fills out with more consumables and weapons for different enemies, but the same rule holds. Anything you want to drink or apply has to go through the Items command after movement. The Y menu remains handy for reading stats, yet it never lets you use an item directly.
