Grim Dawn: How to Farm Ashes of Awakening in Fangs of Asterkarn

Ashes of Awakening is a rare crafting material introduced in Grim Dawn: Fangs of Asterkarn, and it is the key ingredient for turning supported Epic (blue) gear into its Awakened Legendary form. Random drops from enemies and chests happen, but the rate is so low that even finishing the main story on Elite leaves you with only a small stack. The fast route relies on the new Ascension Altar and the Frozen Aster you pick up along the way.

Quick answer: Unlock the Ascension Altar in Kurnhold, offer three or more Frozen Aster to enable Voidmarked chests, then clear dense Challenge Dungeons and kill the Void enemies and bosses those chests summon.

Grim Dawn Fangs of Asterkarn Ashes of Awakening How to Get

Unlock the Ascension Altar in Kurnhold first

Everything about farming Ashes of Awakening runs through the Ascension Altar. You find it in Kurnhold, and it becomes available at level 50. The altar lets you offer crafting materials to change how loot drops in your current run, including the odds of rare materials such as Soul Fragments, Soul Echoes, and Ashes of Awakening.

To reach that point, progress the Kurn settlement quests until the altar objective completes. You do not unlock it by hitting a level cap or by placing random items on the platform. Keep advancing the local story and return when the altar objective opens.

Note: Altar effects only apply to the active game session. They expire when you return to the main menu, so set your bonuses right before a farm run.

Farm Ashes of Awakening from Voidmarked chests

The single most effective source of Ashes of Awakening is Voidmarked containers. Offering three or more Frozen Aster at the Ascension Altar sharply raises the chance of finding Voidmarked chests, along with Voidmarked corpses, stumps, and marked rocks. Interacting with any of these spawns groups of Void enemies and bosses, and each of those has a higher chance of dropping Ashes of Awakening.

Frozen Aster is the gating material here, and it is stubborn to hunt down in the open world. Fortunately, enough of it spawns each session to keep your altar bonus running, so gather what you find and convert it into farm setups.

To squeeze more out of each run, stack the altar with the other offerings that boost related mechanics. A strong combination pairs 3 Frozen Aster with Skeleton Keys for Resplendent Troves, Bloodhound Totems for Tempest Totems, and Aspects of Beronath for extra spoils in Roguelike Dungeons.

With that setup active, clear Challenge Dungeons that hold the densest clusters of chests. These areas turn the most containers into Voidmarked, which means more Void spawns and more Ashes per run.

As a rough benchmark, clearing the Steps of Torment and the Tomb of the Heretic in a single Elite session yields around 80 Ashes of Awakening in about an hour. You can also just play normally with the same altar bonus active for broadly similar returns. Only add mechanics your build can clear cleanly, since turning on every option at once slows each run and does not automatically increase your material income.

Tip: Once you have a surplus, Ashes of Awakening can themselves be offered at the Ascension Altar to raise the drop rates of Soul Echoes and Soul Fragments.

Reach the Noktukari faction and the Runed Orb

Ashes of Awakening only become useful once you can spend them, and that happens at the hidden Noktukari faction. To unlock Awakening, you need to find Elder Noktukari and the Runed Orb inside a secret area west of the Guardian’s Sorrow Rift.

Spend Ashes of Awakening at the Runed Orb

Awakening adds a crafting layer similar to blacksmithing. Any Epic (blue) item marked with a specific symbol can be Awakened at the Runed Orb in exchange for Ashes of Awakening, components or augments, and Iron Bits. The result is a fixed Legendary version of that Epic, with significantly stronger properties.

Order matters here. Awakening consumes the original Epic and creates a brand-new Legendary, so Awaken the blue item first and handle Ascension on the finished Legendary afterward at Jornn the Runekeeper. An Ascended Affix placed on the Epic will not carry over to the newly crafted piece. Preserve any component or augment you want to keep before you commit the recipe, and inspect the Legendary output before paying.

The Runed Orb also handles two other recipes worth remembering. You can craft Aspects of Beronath from 10 Frozen Aster and Soul Fragments from 8 Soul Echoes, which keeps your altar offerings and Awakening loop supplied. Between the Voidmarked farm and these conversions, a single well-planned session gives you enough Ashes to Awaken several pieces of gear without wandering the wilds hoping for a lucky drop.
