How to Beat the Shadow Boss in Castlevania Belmont’s Curse and Where to Find It

The Shadow is Death, fought in Notre-Dame's Choir after three Melody Sheets and an organ puzzle, and beating him unlocks Double Jump.

The Shadow

The Shadow Arcana in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse belongs to Death. You don’t get it in the Catacombs of Paris, where Rose first meets him. You get it in a second fight inside Notre-Dame, in a cathedral you reach through a painting in Dracula’s Castle. That fight also grants the Double Jump ability, so it opens a lot of the map once it’s done.

Quick answer: Defeat the Builder, Occultist, and Artist, then equip Masterpiece and enter the Notre-Dame painting inside the Gallery of Eternal Night. Find all three Melody Sheets and perform them on the Giant Organ. From there, go to the Transept and face Death.

Shadow boss requirements

Notre-Dame stays sealed until you meet both of these conditions:

  • You have defeated three bosses: the Builder (Talos), the Occultist (Carmilla), and the Artist (Brauner).
  • You have the Masterpiece spell, Brauner’s Arcana, equipped in the Equipment menu.

Masterpiece matters because the painting is an Arcanic Resonance. That is a hidden interaction that only switches on when the right Arcana is equipped. Rose’s Tarot reacts when she gets close to one, which tells you you’re in the right spot.

How to enter Notre-Dame through the painting

Open the Equipment menu and slot in Masterpiece. It costs 60 mana per cast, but you only need it equipped here, not cast.
Start in the Grand Hall of the Main Hall and travel west into the Gallery of Eternal Night. Keep going until you reach the large painting of Notre-Dame.
Stand in front of the painting and use the interact prompt. Rose asks Brauner what the painting is for, and after a short exchange with Leon you’re pulled into Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Entering the cathedral completes a Work of Mercy, and a “Work of Mercy completed” message confirms it.

Notre-Dame Melody Sheet locations

Three spirits are scattered around the cathedral, and each one holds a Melody Sheet. Each sheet shows a short run of astrological symbols. To play a sheet, step on the matching symbol keys on the Giant Organ in the Great Organ Room. Every correct melody flips one of three switches and clears part of the corruption blocking the way forward. You may also see a “New clue about THE SHADOW” message as you make progress.

Rose stands on a stone rampart facing a kneeling armored Joan before a burning cathedral, with Rose's dialogue box below.
Rose speaks with Joan on a rampart before a burning Notre-Dame: “Joan of Arc? The warrior who stood against the English? But you were taken prisoner and burned at”

At the entrance, go right and cross the cathedral into the Notre-Dame Undercroft. Continue downward until you reach the Great Organ Room. Drop onto the Giant Organ, head left to the dead end, and smash through the wall to reveal a hidden room. The spirit there hands over the Fugue sheet. Since you’re on the organ already, play it now.

Melody Sheet for the Sonata of Notre-Dame

Go to the West Gallery and push east into the Sealed Scriptorium. Clear the combat encounter there, then smash through the floor to drop into the Stained Glass Gallery. Talk to the spirit below to get the Sonata sheet.

Melody Sheet for the Concerto of Notre-Dame

Start at the West Triforium and head east into La Flèche, the cathedral’s spire. Climb the wooden scaffolding using the grapple anchors and light zip-lines. The spirit at the top gives you the Concerto sheet.

Go back to the Great Organ Room and play the Sonata and Concerto. Once all three switches are on, the route to the boss opens.

Route from the Great Organ Room to the Transept

From the organ, head right into the Collapsed Crypt. Keep moving east and crawl into the vent at the far end, which leads to the Path of the Penitent.
Go up the ventilation shaft, then turn left at the top. Pass the giant knight and enter the doorway to a Mirror of Life room. Save and heal there before the fight.
Head left out into the Notre-Dame Undercroft and proceed to the Transept. Enter the arena through the gate on your right.

A cutscene shows you’re in the right place. Rose finds her father, Trevor Belmont, chained to a giant golden cross. Then Death appears to guard him, and the health bar reads “DEATH.”

The fight alternates between two phases. In the first, Death disappears and slices the arena with laser beams. Each beam shows a silhouette before it fires, so you have time to see it coming. Use the floating platforms to get out of its path.

When the beam sequence ends, Death appears in the arena and you can hit him. Get right up against his legs. He deals no contact damage, so standing close costs you nothing and keeps your combos landing. In this phase he uses scythe slashes, homing projectiles, blades that track you from several directions, and targeted energy bursts.

Once he takes enough damage, another laser grid starts. Survive it and he comes back out, open to attack again. Keep repeating this until his bar is empty.

Death is immune to bleed, freeze, petrify, launch into the air, slam down, Chronomantic Dive’s slow, Freezing Path’s link, and Infernal Pyre’s launch. Burn still works, and so do Chains of Justice’s root and stun.

Shadow rewards: Soul Harvest and Double Jump

When Death’s health runs out, he dissolves and leaves a golden spirit floating in the arena. Absorb it to claim The Shadow Arcana and its spell, Soul Harvest. Double Jump is granted in the same Choir district, so you leave Notre-Dame with it.

  • The Shadow Arcana with the Soul Harvest spell
  • Double Jump ability
  • 1000 XP

To check that Double Jump unlocked, jump and then press Jump again while Rose is still in the air. If she gets a second jump, it worked.

There’s a second, optional fight in Notre-Dame that players also call a shadow fight. Rose faces a dark copy of herself, and the health bar only shows “???”. This is the Doppelganger, and its card is The Self, not The Shadow. It only becomes available after the first ending, once Dracula has been defeated the first time. It takes place in the Gallery of the Four Virtues.

Light the four virtue windows

The gallery has four stained-glass windows, one for each virtue, with clue plaques underneath. A window lights up once you earn its virtue. Each one reacts to the spell of a specific Arcana.

WindowSpell (Arcana)How the virtue is earned
CourageInfernal Pyre (The Warrior)Joan rematch behind the window
JusticeChains of Justice (The Judge)Bell tower bell, blessed by Saint Louis
TemperanceFreezing Path (The Whisperer)Ferryman’s water trial bell
PrudenceMirror Walk (The Sage)Climbing trial bell, granted by Eleanor

You can clear Courage early, before the first ending. For Justice, equip Chains of Justice, climb the bell tower, and hit the large bell at the top. Saint Louis then appears in the cathedral to grant the virtue. For Temperance, solve the stone tablet riddle about its bell, then join the Ferryman’s water trial. Use the grapple rings to get over the spikes and strike the bell. The Ferryman confirms it with the line “Be blessed, Belmont, with the virtue of Temperance!” The green Prudence window opens a climbing trial that also ends at a bell. Hit it and Eleanor grants Prudence.

Start the Doppelganger fight at the altar

After all four windows are lit, Rose says that someone is there. Stand beneath the large round window, in front of the altar illuminated by candles, and press INTERACT (R1, PC: E). A flash triggers a cutscene; Rose’s dark double speaks, and the fight starts.

The double copies Rose’s own weapons and moves, and its attack pattern changes twice over the course of the fight. Keep moving, punish it after dashes and landings, and heal whenever you get a gap. A “HEALED” message confirms your heal went through. Whip combos and aerial spins both work well. You can’t slide through its gap-closing dash, so jump or dash around it.

Don’t attack while “IMMUNE” is showing on the boss. Wait until it comes out of the move, then swing.

Doppelganger rewards and confirmation

  • The Self Arcana with the Absolution spell
  • A new character skin, announced with “New Character Skin Unlocked!”
  • A “Work of Mercy completed” objective update
  • The “Shadow Work” trophy

Absolution is a held cast. While you hold it, Rose pulls the curse out of every nearby enemy, deals heavy damage, and heals for each enemy it hits. It costs 50 mana. A cutscene with Sypha plays after the win, and then Rose is sent back to the altar.
