How to Close a Rented Shop at Rust’s Apartment Complex

Shut down your Rentable Shop through its wheel menu, plus the two conditions that close it automatically.

Rentable Shops at the new Apartment Complex give you a real storefront inside a safe zone, but once you rent one, you may want to shut it down early to stop showing sell orders or to clear the stall. Closing works through the same radial menu you already use for a vending machine, and it takes only a second.

Quick answer: Look at the shop you rented, open its wheel (radial) menu, and select Close. The stall also closes on its own when the rental time runs out or when it can no longer pay its Scrap upkeep.

Close a shop manually from the wheel menu

A rented shop behaves just like a vending machine once it is set up. You stock inventory, set sell orders, and set prices, and the radial menu carries the controls for the storefront itself. Alongside the option to open the shop and to paint its sign for local advertising, that menu includes a Close option.

Choose Close from the menu. This shuts the storefront so it no longer displays your sell orders to passing players and drones.

To reopen later, return to the same shop and select Open from the wheel menu. As long as the lease is still active, your stall goes live again.

Note: Closing the shop stops it from selling, but it does not refund the Scrap you already paid, and the hourly upkeep continues to tick while the lease is active.

When a shop closes automatically

You do not always have to close a stall yourself. A Rentable Shop shuts down on its own in two situations, both tied to Scrap.

TriggerWhat happens
Rental time endsThe shop closes once its operating period expires.
Scrap runs outThe shop closes when it can no longer cover its upkeep.

Because of this, letting the lease expire is the simplest way to end a shop for good. If you stop feeding it Scrap, it will close itself when the balance is gone.

Rentable Shop costs and upkeep

Knowing the rental terms helps you decide whether to close a stall early or simply let it lapse. There are roughly a dozen shop stalls to rent at the Apartment Complex, and each one runs on Scrap.

DetailValue
Upfront cost100 Scrap
Rental length12 hours
Hourly upkeep10 Scrap per real-world hour
AccessOn foot and by drone
SafetyInside the safe zone, so it cannot be raided

When a stall is empty, a Rent Lease Agreement appears on the front for the next player to interact with. That is also how you confirm your own shop has fully closed and returned to the pool.

How to confirm the shop is closed

You will know the close worked when the storefront stops showing your sell orders to other players and drones. If the full lease has ended, the stall reverts to a vacant state and the Rent Lease Agreement reappears on the front, meaning it is open for anyone to rent again.

One thing to keep in mind before you close anything: the shops sit in a central safe zone, which is exactly what keeps them from advertising the location of your main base the way a vending machine bolted to your walls would. If you are closing a stall to move loot, the safe zone protects the storefront the entire time it is rented.
