Sample Canisters drive the entire seasonal loop in The Division 2 Year 8 Season 2, Into the Dark. You feed them into the Cleaning up the Streets global modifier to unlock High-Quality Munitions bonuses and to trigger the stronger Surged versions of your Active Modifiers. The catch is that they do not drop reliably, and the Toxic Dark Zone where they originate can be punishing if you wander in without a proper build.
Quick answer: Start a Hyena Retaliation mission, clear your first Control Point, then detour through the side alleys on your way to the second Point to find the Knock-Knock Gang elite kill squad. Wiping the whole squad hands you a guaranteed 30 Sample Canisters per run, and runs with three or more Control Points can spawn additional squads for even more.
Where Sample Canisters come from in Into the Dark
The canisters are tied to Hyena activity and the new Potent Spice storyline. The most plentiful supply sits inside the Toxic Dark Zone on the D.C. map, but Hyena enemies in regular missions can drop them too. Drop rates change sharply depending on where you fight, which is why a guaranteed source matters more than raw enemy count.
| Source | Canister yield |
|---|---|
| Toxic Dark Zone Landmark chests | Guaranteed large amount |
| Toxic Dark Zone material chests | Guaranteed medium amount |
| Hyena enemies inside the Toxic Dark Zone | Medium chance |
| Knock-Knock Gang (Retaliation) | Guaranteed 30 per squad |
| Hyena enemies in missions outside the Dark Zone | Small chance |
| Other enemy factions | Greatly reduced chance |
Note: The canister cap is 90, so there is no benefit to hoarding past that point. Spend the overflow on modifier upgrades rather than letting it sit.

The reworked PvE Dark Zone is a shared space for up to 12 Agents with Rogue protocol disabled and player damage turned off, so you can focus entirely on Hyena forces and loot. Landmark chests are the single most reliable in-zone source, with material chests behind them. Running Landmarks back to back is the fastest way to bank large amounts if you can survive the environment.

The complication is Toxicity. The meter fills the moment you enter and keeps climbing, layering on debuffs the longer you stay. Clearing a Landmark means beating three waves of enemies and a boss before the chest opens, and if someone has already cracked it, you wait roughly ten minutes for the reset. You also need a build that can hold up to the Potent Spice-boosted Hyenas, which makes this a poor choice for newer players or anyone wanting quick numbers.
Retaliation farming with the Knock-Knock Gang
If you would rather skip the Dark Zone entirely, a Hyena Retaliation mission gives you a clean, guaranteed payout. The target is a new elite kill squad called the Knock-Knock Gang, and defeating a full squad always drops 30 Sample Canisters. Everything else in the mission, including the Control Points themselves, gives you nothing, so treat Points as a means to reach the squads.

You confirm it worked when the canisters land directly in your inventory. There is no extraction step in Retaliation, and no other enemy type here will add to the count.
How to spend Sample Canisters at the Recombinant vendor
Once you have a stack, head to the White House and look for the Recombinant vendor, positioned right beside the Specialization table in your Base of Operations. Contributing canisters there fills the Sample Size bar and unlocks progressively stronger High-Quality Munitions bonuses for the season.

Every canister added at the vendor grants five High-Quality Munitions stacks. While at least one stack remains, all of your unlocked bonuses stay active. Stacks only drain when you reload from an empty magazine, so reloads mid-magazine cost you nothing. Pairing the buff with large-magazine weapons stretches each stack much further.
Canisters have a second use too. When you activate an Active Modifier with enough in your inventory, they are automatically consumed to trigger that modifier’s Surged version, which adds bonus effects and trims drawbacks. Inside the Toxic Dark Zone, every Surge activation also knocks down your Toxicity, turning canister management into both a power spike and a survival tool.
For steady progress, Retaliation is the dependable grind that never wastes a run, while Landmark farming in the Toxic Dark Zone scales higher if your build can handle the pressure. Bank canisters at the vendor early to raise your Sample Size bar, then route any overflow above the 90 cap into Surge activations so nothing goes to waste.
