The Handyman achievement in How to Fish asks for one specific thing. You have to defeat the game’s final boss, the Mutated Bowhead Whale, and land the last hit with nothing but your bare hands. It sits among the rarest achievements in the game, but the requirement is narrower than it sounds once you understand exactly what the game is checking for.
Quick answer: Weaken the Mutated Bowhead Whale with your guns as much as you want, then switch to empty hands and deliver the final killing blow with your fists. Guns and brass knuckles do not count for the last hit, so only bare hands will trigger the unlock.
What Handyman actually requires
The achievement has two conditions layered on top of each other. First, you need to reach and fight the Mutated Bowhead Whale, which is the last boss on the volcano island. Second, the final blow that drops its health to zero must come from your fists.
You are allowed to use weapons during the fight. Only the killing blow is restricted. That means you can safely empty your gun into the boss to bring it low, then finish the job by hand. Brass knuckles are treated as a weapon here and will not satisfy the check, so unequip them completely before the last hit.
Prep before the volcano fight
Since patch 1.0.5, you can no longer jump straight to Volcano Island from the Lighthouse. You have to follow the normal island route to reach the final area. Once you land on the final island, gather enough money to buy the Assault Rifle and, ideally, all of its upgrades before you commit to the boss.

Note: The Mutated Bowhead Whale is the toughest fight in the game, so walking in overprepared is worth the extra grind.
Summon and position the boss
Do not try to escape the fight by sailing away. Pulling the boss too far from the encounter area can cause it to despawn and reset the whole attempt. Create distance to read its attacks, but stay inside the intended arena.
Land the bare-hand killing blow
If the last hit came from a gun or brass knuckles, Handyman will not trigger even though the boss is dead. Those are the two most common reasons the achievement fails to pop, so double-check your hands are empty before the final swing.
Doing it in co-op
How to Fish supports up to four players, and the whale fight becomes much more forgiving with a team. More guns mean the boss drops faster, and teammates can revive each other if someone goes down.
The reward is shared, too. If any player in the lobby lands the killing blow correctly with bare hands, every member of the group earns the Handyman achievement. That lets one confident player handle the risky finish while the rest keep pressure on the boss.
Solo is entirely doable as well, but the margin is thinner. Without teammates to revive you, keeping your health topped off before the final punch is the single most important habit for a clean unlock.
Handyman is best treated as a dedicated cleanup goal after you have already finished the story once and learned the whale’s attack patterns. Keep it separate from the Easy achievement, which rewards killing a boss within 10 seconds and pulls in the opposite direction. Learn the fight first, come in with a maxed rifle and a full health bar, then let your fists do the last bit of work.
