How to Beat Panthalus and Capture the Ocean King in Palworld 1.0

Everything you need to summon, defeat, and catch the Level 70 Water boss guarding the World Tree.

Everything you need to summon, defeat, and catch the Level 70 Water boss guarding the World Tree.

Panthalus is the Level 70 Water-type boss standing between you and the World Tree in Palworld 1.0. It has more than 350,000 HP, fights on an open ocean arena with a single tiny island, and cannot be found in the wild. You summon it yourself after a short scavenger hunt, then win by exploiting its Electric weakness while staying airborne.

Quick answer: Ride a fast-flying Electric Pal like Beakon or Helzephyr Lux, fly above the water and hit the blue crystal on Panthalus’ head with a Rocket Launcher, Plasma Cannon, or Multi-Guided Missile Launcher, dodge its large water attacks by flying out over the sea, and throw any Pal Sphere the moment it drops to 1 HP for a guaranteed catch.

Unlock the Panthalus fight: Echobones and the Echoing Flute

You can start the quest at any time by visiting the Ancient Civilization Researcher on the Deserted Islet, a small island west of the No Man’s Trail fast travel point. In the main story, the quest becomes available after completing The Calamity, when you speak with Auri near the cliff outside the Azure Covenant Tower. Either way, you are tasked with collecting four Echobones from the giant whale skeletons scattered across the Palpagos Islands.

Once the quest is active, each Echobone location shoots a yellow beacon into the sky, which makes them easy to spot from the air.

After collecting all four bones, return to any base and craft the Echoing Flute at a workbench such as the Primitive Workbench. Bring the flute back to the Deserted Islet, speak with the researcher, then examine the glowing blue stone to summon the boss.

Tip: The encounter begins the instant you trigger it, so finish your entire loadout before you interact with the stone.

Best Pals and loadout for the Panthalus fight

Panthalus is a pure Water-type, so Electric damage is by far the most effective. The arena is almost entirely ocean, which makes ground-based Pals useless. Reach at least Level 71 so you can equip the Ancient Shield and level your Pals to match. A fast flying mount keeps you above the water, where your damage is highest, and lets you outrun the boss as it moves around the arena.

PalRole
BeakonFast Electric flying mount with strong mobility for dodging large AoE attacks.
Helzephyr LuxElectric/Dark flying mount with powerful Electric attacks and good survivability.
Solmora LuxWater/Electric swimming mount whose Partner Skill converts your attacks to Electric damage.

For weapons, bring the highest-damage endgame gear you own. A Rocket Launcher offers strong burst damage and long range so you can fire while mounted. A Plasma Cannon or Multi-Guided Missile Launcher works as reliable backup damage to beat the timer. For armor, the Ancient Armor, Ancient Helm, and Ancient Shield give the best protection against Panthalus’ water attacks.

Crucially, bring plenty of Pal Spheres. Panthalus is designed to be captured, and a basic sphere is all you need once it hits 1 HP.

Panthalus attacks and both fight phases

Panthalus prefers to keep its distance and fills the arena with wide water attacks. Learning the patterns matters more than raw defense, because several attacks cover almost the entire island.

AttackWhat it does
Bubble RainFires homing bubbles from its crown that linger and burst on impact or after a few seconds.
Creeping BubblesSurrounds you with bubbles that slowly merge toward the center and explode.
Aqua BladeLaunches large, sharp water blades.
Tidal ChargeBody slam that spawns a wave moving in one direction.
MaelstromA shrinking vortex that pulls you in and ends in a water pillar explosion.
Grand BreachDives, then leaps out, sending damaging ripples outward.
Aqua TornadoSummons multiple massive tornadoes that slowly track you.
TsunamiA huge wave you can only clear with a flying Pal or the island’s air pressure jump.

Once its health drops to around half, Panthalus enters a second phase and starts glowing. It leans heavily on Aqua Tornado and Maelstrom here and begins summoning Tsunamis across the arena. It also moves closer and uses devastating body slams. If you are directly underneath it during a slam, it is a guaranteed instant kill, so keep moving after every shot and never sit still.

How to beat Panthalus

Prepare everything before you trigger the fight. Equip your flying Electric mount’s saddle, load your best weapon, and stock Pal Spheres. The encounter starts the moment you interact with the summon stone.
Mount your flying Pal and stay airborne for the entire fight. Being above the water keeps your damage high and lets you reposition instantly.
Focus all your fire on the glowing blue crystal on top of Panthalus’ head. Hits there deal critical damage, shown by large orange numbers. Whether you are using firearms or mounted attacks, prioritize that weak point.
When a large AoE attack winds up, fly out over the surrounding water, wait for it to end, then return. Evade the animation path immediately for tidal waves and Maelstrom. Consider bringing a second flying mount in case your main one is knocked out.
Keep steady pressure through the second phase and watch for body slams. Never hover directly beneath Panthalus, and jump over or fly above incoming Tsunamis.
Stop your burst damage as its health nears the end. Panthalus cannot be killed by damage. Its HP locks at exactly 1 point instead of dropping to zero.

Capture Panthalus at 1 HP

Once Panthalus is reduced to its final point of health, throw any Pal Sphere. The capture is scripted and 100% guaranteed, so there is no reason to use a higher-tier sphere or weaken it further. You will know it worked when Panthalus is added to your Paldeck.

After the catch, speak with the Ancient Civilization Researcher to complete the quest. If you defeat Panthalus again later, it respawns immediately with no waiting time, so you can refight it to catch duplicates or farm its loot as often as you like.

What Panthalus unlocks

Capturing Panthalus is the key to progressing the main story. With the ocean king in your party, head to the World Tree gate terminal to bring down the barrier and access the game’s final story sequence. Panthalus itself is a No. 203 Water Pal with high HP and Defense, and it ranks as an S-Tier flying mount, making it a strong pick for exploration once the fight is behind you.
