Quick answer: In the Pangzhen backstreet, a purple-robed scarecrow conceals Acolyte Lei Ting below Old Man Gen’s House. Press E on the figure to enter a lightning-filled moor exposed to the storm.
Victory grants Leiting’s Thunder Mask, which is one of the four masks for Secrets at the Heart of the Lake. This battle is punishing at every stage, so learn what to expect before pressing E.

Find the scarecrow on dirt among fallen logs: it’s a purple-robed figure marked with an E prompt. From the Old Man Gen’s House bell, it’s about 77 m away; from the Green Serpent House bell, about 142 m.

Use the Old Man Gen’s House side. Coming from Green Serpent House, a bamboo spike barricade blocks the path, with a pack of enemies about 20 m past it, and rock pockets farther along stop you as well.
The pack on the slope is dangerous on its own. On Wayfarer these three can kill you in about 50 seconds:
| Enemy | HP |
|---|---|
| Scarlet Swordsman | 16,779 |
| Faceless Captain | 16,779 |
| Faceless Swordsman | 8,686 |
If that pack kills you near the scarecrow, you come back at the scarecrow rather than at a bell, so you don’t have to repeat the whole walk.
Lei Ting’s moveset and attacks
Most of the pressure comes from lightning, and it can reach you anywhere on the moor. The pole blade takes over once Lei Ting closes in.

Forked lightning across the moor
Gold light spreads across the ground as white bolts split into forks and streak toward Soul. Their reach is long, and they may strike from several directions at the same time, so retreating still leaves you within range.

Bursting balls of orange sparks
Balls of orange sparks gather in the air around you and then burst. Sometimes two appear at once, one on each side of Soul.

Flying lunge with the pole blade
Sparks crackle along Lei Ting’s long blade as Lei Ting flies toward you with it held horizontally, then drives it forward at close range.

Overhead swing with a red flash
As Lei Ting raises the blade overhead, red streaks flash across the screen. Use that flash as the signal to dodge.

Tips for the Lei Ting fight
Be ready to try repeatedly. At full HP, a Pathbreaker attempt takes roughly 58 seconds but chips off only 0.2% of the bar. On Wayfarer, it takes roughly 94 seconds and reduces the bar by about 2.1%. If you can’t make progress, leave and return after upgrading your weapons.
Because the moor has no cover, keeping your distance just gives the bolts an open line to you. Your own attacks land up close, so the open arena makes staying near Lei Ting the more sensible choice, even though it doesn’t guarantee a win.
Bring a Longevity Tonic, and rest at Old Man Gen’s House before you start the walk down.
What you get for defeating Lei Ting
The reward is Leiting’s Thunder Mask, listed as a “Story Item” and one of the four masks. Its description reads:

“A mask of interwoven gold and green, with thunderous power surging within.”
The item text also ties the mask to the four Acolytes and the sealed ruins: “The Forbidden Ruins have been sealed shut ever since an intruder caused havoc within. Even the four Acolytes tasked with hunting down traitors can no longer enter on their own.”
