Quick answer: Defense in Phantom Blade Zero comes from survival accessories (Boulderguard, Ancient Armor Fragment, Jewel’s Knot and the elemental wards), the Kuye Dew remedy, and the Against All Odds ability. Blocking, parrying, and dodging also reduce damage.
You cut incoming damage by stacking up what you wear, what you drink, and what you train, and then by keeping Soul out of Guard Break so those effects stay active.
Equip survival accessories
Open Character, then Equip. The ACCESSORIES grid has six slots. Three are open from the start, and three are locked. When you select an empty slot, the game shows “EQUIP ACCESSORY” with the line “Equip rare accessories to fortify the body or enhance martial techniques.”

The accessory picker sorts items into category tabs and also has an “All” view. Each card carries a type label. Treasure Basin, for example, is a Support accessory that “Increases the amount of Remnant Dust dropped by 10%.” The accessories that reduce damage are the survival type.

Weeping Creek Valley, the first region, has three survival accessories: Boulderguard, Ancient Armor Fragment, and Medicine Case. Boulderguard “Reduces damage taken by 15% while not Guard-Broken.” Ancient Armor Fragment works on a sliding scale: “The higher your HP, the greater the damage reduction, up to 20% at full HP.” The rest, including Jewel’s Knot (“Increases HP by 15%.”) and the elemental wards, are found in later regions.
Every survival accessory, its effect and where it is (region and nearest bell):
| Accessory | Effect | Region and nearest bell |
|---|---|---|
| Reduces damage taken by 15% while not Guard-Broken. | Weeping Creek Valley, The Axemaster’s Holding Cell | |
| The higher your HP, the greater the damage reduction, up to 20% at full HP. | Weeping Creek Valley, Crimson Manor | |

| Reduces Chill effects by 50% and reduces Freeze duration by 50%. | Crimson Forest, Crimson Forest Sha-Chi Tower Gate (chest) | |

Refining makes several of them stronger. A refined Jewel’s Knot “Increases HP by 25%.” A refined Arrowward “Reduces ranged damage and Sha-Chi depletion taken by 30%.” Refined Flameward, Thunderward, and Preservation Jar go from 50% to 80%.

Add to Google Preferences →Unlock more accessory slots with Boundless Capacity
The locked slots open through the Boundless Capacity ability. Each level reads “Adds 1 accessory slot.” and is paid for in Remnant Dust.
| Ability level | Remnant Dust cost |
|---|---|
| Boundless Capacity · Lv. 1 | 10,000 |
| Boundless Capacity · Lv. 2 | 40,000 |
| Boundless Capacity · Lv. 3 | 65,000 |
| Boundless Capacity · Lv. 4 | 80,000 |
Use Kuye Dew for a timed damage reduction
Kuye Dew is a remedy found in Crimson Forest. At its base level it “Reduces damage taken by 20% for 15 seconds and restores 40% HP over 10 seconds.” Upgrading it with Remnant Dust raises the reduction, the duration, and the healing.
| Level | Cost and uses | Damage reduction | Healing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base | — | 20% for 15 seconds | 40% HP over 10 seconds |
| Lv. 2 | 2,800 Remnant Dust, 3 uses | 30% for 15 seconds | 40% HP over 10 seconds |
| Lv. 3 | 4,200 Remnant Dust, 3 uses | 30% for 20 seconds | 50% HP over 10 seconds |
Train Against All Odds and Endless Renewal
Two abilities help keep Soul alive. Against All Odds costs 85,000 Remnant Dust and works as a safety net: “Once per battle, prevents one attack that would reduce HP below 10%.”
Endless Renewal · Lv. 1 costs 20,000 Remnant Dust and reads “[Execute] Assassinations and Executions restore HP and Sha-Chi.” Its training screen also shows “Requires 1 Blackstone“, so you need that item before you can learn it.
Avoid Guard Break to keep your defenses active
At the screen’s bottom left, the HP bar appears with the medicine gourd count (R) beside it. Accessory effects depend on your Guard Break status. Boulderguard’s 15% damage reduction stops when you become Guard-Broken. Mother’s Talisman, with the effect “Restores 10% HP when Guard-Broken.”, activates only once Guard Break occurs.

- Guard and parry to keep Sha-Chi up.
- Dodge attacks that flash red instead of blocking them.
- Switch weapons when Sha-Chi runs low, since switching fully restores it.
