Quick answer: The Puppeteer’s Bell is the reward for defeating Dusk, the Puppeteer, the boss at the bottom of the Broken Puppet Pit in the Village of Lu. Ringing the Phantom Edge commands Puppets to fight for you.

Where to get the Puppeteer’s Bell

The Puppeteer’s Bell sits in the Village of Lu region, deep in the Broken Puppet Pit. Two bells cover the pit. Broken Puppet Pit Entrance is at the top, and Broken Puppet Pit Bottom is the closest bell to Dusk’s arena. The Village of Lu interactive map marks the Broken Puppet Pit Entrance bell, and the Village of Lu collectibles guide covers the rest of the region.

Dusk, the Puppeteer awaits in the pit’s depths, several dozen metres from the Broken Puppet Pit Bottom bell. His boss card depicts him using this bell to direct puppet constructs and giant severed limbs, while summoning copies of himself as well. Defeat him and the bell is yours once his final words end, which fits the item card’s note that Dusk left it behind.

Puppeteer’s Bell item card

Once the bell is yours, its card in the inventory reads as follows.

  • Type: Phantom Edge
  • Description: “The Puppeteer’s bell rings with a clear, ethereal chime. Each ring commands all manner of Puppets.”
  • Card line: “An old ritual bell left behind by the Puppeteer, Dusk.”

Puppeteer’s Bell arts and Soul Temper

Three arts open up as the weapon levels, and a Soul Temper turns the bell into Abyssal Bell.

ArtUnlocksEffect
Abyssal BellSoul Temper upgrade“Soul Tempers into Abyssal Bell, allowing you to summon a 3rd powerful Puppet.”
Fortified ShieldsWeapon Lv 5“Greatly increases the shield durability of Sword-and-Shield Puppets and Spear-and-Shield Puppets.”
Counter GuardWeapon Lv 15“Sword-and-Shield Puppets and Spear-and-Shield Puppets counterattack after blocking enemy attacks.”
Mindless ImpactWeapon Lv 25“Greatly increases the Guard Break of all summoned Puppets.”

Abyssal Bell costs Herald’s Lingering Threads, a Mount Soulrend material, plus 5,000 Remnant Dust. You Soul Temper at Myst, and the full spread of all Soul Tempering materials shows where the threads fit in. The level-gated arts come from raising the weapon with Remnant Dust and materials, which works the same way as when you upgrade weapons of any kind.

Is the Puppeteer’s Bell worth using

The Puppeteer’s Bell is a summoning Phantom Edge, so its value comes from the Puppets that fight beside you rather than from your own swings. Its upgrades lean toward Sword-and-Shield and Spear-and-Shield Puppets, giving them sturdier shields and a counterattack after they block. Mindless Impact then raises the Guard Break of every Puppet you have out, and Abyssal Bell lets you summon a third.

For another summoning choice in the same region, the Village of Lu’s other summoning Phantom Edge is Kuye Temple Prayer Beads. The full weapons list includes every weapon and Phantom Edge in the game.
