The Spud Gun is the ranged weapon that turns Scrap Mechanic Survival from risky hammer swings into controlled fights. It fires potatoes, deals 28 damage, and lets you clear Scrap Bots, raid warehouses, and defend crops from a safe distance. There are two versions worth knowing about, and they are obtained in completely different ways.
Quick answer: The full Spud Gun is bought from the Farmer Merchant for 2 Orange Crates, 2 Blueberry Crates, and 1 Caged Farmer. The weaker Scrap Spud Gun is an early quest reward that you then craft at a Craftbot. Both use Potatoes as ammo.

What the Spud Gun does
Left mouse fires a potato. Holding right mouse aims down the makeshift sights and zooms your view, which helps with distant targets. The potatoes destroy any block or part with 1 durability, trigger Sensors, Switches, and Buttons, and set off Explosive Canisters. Each hit also applies a small knockback.
The gun counts as a tool, so it stays with you when your mechanic dies. Fire a potato at a soil mound and it plants a potato crop, which is handy for keeping your own ammo supply going.

Add to Google Preferences →Trade requirements for the full Spud Gun
The full Spud Gun cannot be crafted. It is traded from the Farmer Merchant, who usually sits near a Package Station, often behind or beside the packing building. Exact placement shifts with world generation, so follow the road until you reach the merchant platform.
| Item needed | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Orange Crate | 2 |
| Blueberry Crate | 2 |
| Caged Farmer | 1 |
Both crates are made from fruit you grow yourself, and fruit seeds are locked behind an earlier delivery. That means the real starting point is farming vegetables, not chasing the gun directly.
Unlock fruit seeds by delivering vegetables
Grow fruit and make the crates
Find and deliver a Caged Farmer
The last piece of the trade is a Caged Farmer, a trapped NPC held inside a metal cage. These spawn in various spots around the map, often near ruins, warehouses, or close to the merchant area. Locate one, lift the whole cage onto your vehicle, and haul it back.
Place the cage on the designated deposit area at the merchant platform. With the 2 Blueberry Crates, 2 Orange Crates, and the Caged Farmer all deposited, you can finally purchase the Spud Gun. Once it appears in your inventory, the trade is complete.
The Scrap Spud Gun: an earlier, craftable version
Before the full trade is realistic, you can get the Scrap Spud Gun. It is a weaker early-quest reward with worse sights, poor accuracy, and shorter range, but it gives you a ranged option besides the hammer. Unlike the traded gun, its schematic is a quest reward that you then craft yourself at a Craftbot.

One route unlocks the schematic by delivering a tomato crate to the Farmers Hideout during the Palate Cleanser quest. Another comes from Hubert at the Hideout entrance through the main quest “Home is Where Your Couch Is,” where you build a watchtower to earn the recipe. The Hubert quest asks for these building materials.
| Material | Quantity | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Scrap Wood Block | 835 | Picked up from shacks around the map |
| Solid Net Block | 51 | Craftbot (20x per 5x Metal Block Level 2) |
| Small Pipe Long | 15 | Found on vehicles, or craft 1x per Metal Block Level 1 |
| Shack Light | 1 | Inside shacks |
Gather the materials, build the tower at the structure beside Hubert following its building plan, then talk to Hubert again. Finishing the mission unlocks the crafting recipe.
Once the schematic is unlocked, open a Craftbot, select the blueprint, and craft. Crafting takes about 30 seconds. Recipe amounts reported for the crafted gun vary slightly, so check your Craftbot’s stated cost before you commit materials.
| Craft cost (reported) | Craft time |
|---|---|
| 50 Scrap Metal + 2 Component Kits | ~10 sec |
| 50 Metal Block Level 1 + 5 Component Kit | ~30 sec |
Feeding it: Potatoes as ammo
Both guns run on Potatoes in Survival Mode, so a steady supply matters as much as the gun itself. Grow potatoes on your farm, and remember you can plant new ones by firing a potato at a soil mound. Since farms draw raids, pair your potato plots with the same walls that protect your fruit and vegetables.
Tip: Keep the packing vehicle intact after you buy the Spud Gun. The same Large Storage and Vacuum Pump setup speeds up every future crate delivery and any additional trades.
With the gun in hand and potatoes stockpiled, warehouse clears and farm defenses stop being a gamble. You can pick off Scrap Bots before they swarm, snipe distant threats through the sights, and stop leaning on close-range hammer fights to survive.
