How to Get the Scarlet Knightly Gambeson in The Blood of Dawnwalker

The Silver Mines fight in the prologue hands Coen a level 4 chest piece worth 61 armour.

The Silver Mines fight in the prologue hands Coen a level 4 chest piece worth 61 armour.

Coen starts The Blood of Dawnwalker in cloth. The Comfortable Tunic and the other prologue-tier chest pieces barely blunt a soldier’s swing, which makes the early hours of Rebel Wolves’ RPG feel far harsher than they need to be. There is one piece of gear you can pick up before the prologue ends that changes that maths, and it sits in a bandit camp at the northern edge of the map.

Quick answer: Fast travel to the Silver Mines at the top of the map, fight the Ambrus’s Soldier and the two bandits who join him, then open the wooden chests in their camp. The Scarlet Knightly Gambeson is inside, alongside the Recipe for Mending Ointment.

Scarlet Knightly Gambeson stats and location

61 armour on a level 4 chest piece is a large jump this early. Nothing else you can reach during the prologue comes close, and because armour can be upgraded later at blacksmiths and armorers, it stays useful well past the point you find it.

The Silver Mines sit at the very top of the map, at the northern end of the region you can reach in the prologue. Open the map, set the marker on the Silver Mines point, and travel there directly rather than walking the whole route.

Prepare before you approach the mine entrance

This is a three-on-one fight against enemies that hit harder than anything the prologue has thrown at you so far, and Coen’s damage output at this stage is low. Sort three things out before you climb the path.

  • Make a manual save. If the fight goes badly you will want to retry it without losing progress.
  • Stock food and healing items. Apples, Parasol Mushrooms, Uriashi Smoked Cheese and similar consumables all work as mid-fight recovery.
  • Equip the strongest weapon you own. The Polished Long Cleaver is the standout option at this point in the game and makes the encounter noticeably shorter.

Clearing the Silver Mines camp

Travel to the Silver Mines and follow the mountain path uphill toward the mine entrance. A single guard is posted at the top of the trail, standing watch over the approach.

Talk to the Ambrus’s Soldier guarding the entrance. He tells Coen to keep away from the mines, and the conversation stays tense whichever replies you pick. Work through the dialogue until the option to press him runs out.
Start the fight. The soldier draws first, and two more bandits come running from the camp behind him almost immediately, so back away from the narrow ground near the entrance and fight where you have room to dodge.

Loot every body once the last enemy drops. The drops here are randomised and can include Denarius, rings and amulets such as the Band of Defence, Ring of Astral Defence and Amulet of Regeneration.

Move into the camp itself and open the wooden chests scattered around it. The Scarlet Knightly Gambeson and the Recipe for Mending Ointment are in this cluster of containers, mixed in with food and drink such as Garlic, Moldovan Red Wine and Slivovitz.

Confirming you have it and equipping the armour

Open the inventory and go to the chest slot. The gambeson shows 61 Armour and a level 4 requirement in its item card, and swapping it in replaces whatever starting chest piece Coen is wearing, usually the Comfortable Tunic. If you are still below level 4, the item sits in your bags until you hit the requirement, so hold onto it rather than selling it.

Check the crafting menu as well. The Recipe for Mending Ointment unlocks Mending Ointment as a craftable healing item, which is worth making before you push further north.

Note: if the chests are empty when you reach them, you have almost certainly opened only the containers near the corpses. The camp has several wooden chests spread across it, so sweep the whole clearing before leaving.

The gambeson carries you comfortably through the opening stretch of the campaign, and since armour can be improved by blacksmiths later on, there is no rush to replace it the moment something shinier appears. The genuinely better chest pieces, including the legendary armour dropped by Ambrus, are locked behind boss fights much further into the 30-day countdown.
