The Unknown Resonant is a side quest set in the seventh region of Control Resonant, and finishing it is the only way to unlock the Command ability and pop the Graffiti Artist trophy. The catch is that the region shifts around you and several floating buildings only become reachable after you have done the right prep work. Get the setup right and the quest is a straight line from a distress call to a rooftop boss.

Quick answer: Finish Pope’s Research first, ride the gravity well by the Evac Building up to the Patterned Field Office, disrupt the pattern, beat the Co-Director, then hold Down on the D-pad in The Gap.

Prerequisites: Pope’s Research, Shift, and Reach

You cannot reach The Resonant until the Unknown’s gravity wells are switched on, and that only happens once Pope’s Research is complete. This side quest runs alongside the late-game story mission Sever the Hedron Links, so if the Unknown feels impossible to cross, that is the missing step. You also need two traversal abilities before the puzzle section will work.

  • Pope’s Research completed, which activates the gravity wells used to move through the Unknown.
  • Shift, earned from the Incursion Fault, to align with gravity anomalies and stabilise on rotated surfaces.
  • Reach, earned from the Subway Fault, to pull yourself toward traversal points across gaps.

Pope’s Research itself sends you to set up eight probe relays across the Unknown, then investigate Point 0 at the centre of the region. Each relay starts by destroying a research balloon platform and planting antennas in the marked circles, which powers the gravity wells and rewards the Budding Analyst trophy. Do this before you go looking for the Rangers.

Where to find the Unknown Resonant in Unknown 7

The trigger sits in Unknown 7, near the Evac Building. Zoe radios in about a distress call from Rangers and a possible Resonant near the Field Office once you start exploring the floating landmarks. Head to the fast travel door by the Evac Building and look for the swirling yellow-car vortex on the nearby rooftop, marked as a Gravity Well. That well runs south of the region and carries you up toward the Field Office.

The Unknown Resonant walkthrough

Drop into the swirling car vortex on the rooftop and ride the vertical fall down between the skyscraper ruins. You land on a flooded street as Arish sends out the distress call and the objective updates to “Get to the Rangers.”

Follow the marker into the warehouse ahead. Clear out the Hiss enemies waiting inside, then speak to the trapped FBC Rangers to regroup before the doors open onto the street.
Once the Rangers open the bay doors, you face a set of four glowing security booths blocking the path. Three sit still while one is out of sync, shifting slightly differently from the rest. Hit the odd one out with a telekinetic Launch to disrupt the pattern and open the way.

Move through the cleared checkpoint with the Rangers. A resonant shockwave hits, followed by an ambush in the alley. Clear the hostiles before pushing on.

You reach a locked gate that only opens once its power core is charged. Facing the door, head to the left side of the street and drop straight down. Do not use Shift here. Drop once more with Reach to land on the road below, then use Shift to stabilise yourself and grab the electric charge from the power core.
Carry the charge to the opposite side with Reach and slot it into a dead power core there. This resets the charge timer so you can pick it back up fresh. Look above you for a Reach point, climb the wall, use Shift to return to the Rangers, and sprint the charge into the gate’s power receiver to open it.

The charge decays on a timer, which is why the mid-route dead core matters. Slotting it there before it runs out buys you the time to make the final run to the gate.

Push through the open gate and clear the next wave of enemies after another shockwave. When the road dead-ends at a blocked gate, enter the building on the left, climb the stairwells, and cross the rooftops and fire escapes. Keep jumping ledge to ledge until you reach an elevated plaza decorated with yellow hot air balloons.
Survive the plaza ambush alongside the Rangers, then enter the building ahead to activate the Patterned Field Office fast travel door. Take the elevator up and hold the on-screen prompt to start the boss fight.

How to beat the Co-Director boss fight

The Resonant here is the Co-Director, and the fight opens with two Rangers turned against you. Take those turned Rangers down first, then focus the boss. The Co-Director prefers to keep its distance and fire ranged projectiles, most of which are easy to dodge with a little spacing.

Avoid the glowing purple beam at all costs. It shreds your health bar faster than any other attack in the fight.

When you close in to attack, the boss contracts the ring of Rangers around itself. That is your cue to back off, because it then spins the ring outward for heavy damage. Whenever the beam is not aimed at you, dart in and kill whichever Ranger has been turned, since the Co-Director keeps converting more as the fight drags on.

Around 30 to 40 percent health lost, it tightens the ring and spins it rapidly while charging at you, so just keep running until the move ends. It also slams the entire ring into the ground for a big impact hit, which you dodge by rolling away from the Resonant. At 50 percent health, a fresh group of Rangers arrives, meaning more enemies to convert, and the outer-ring Rangers begin firing rockets. Handle the turned Rangers carefully from this point, keep dodging the beam, and the rest of the fight repeats the same patterns until it goes down.

Rewards and the Graffiti Artist trophy

Defeating the Co-Director drops crafting materials, including Source, a Corrupted Element, a Warped Resonance, and a Distorted Form, and hands over these permanent rewards:

With the boss defeated, Dylan regains consciousness in the dark astral realm called The Gap and finds himself before a glowing wall carving. Keep Down pressed on the D-pad to start the departure sequence. Once you exit The Gap, the Graffiti Artist trophy pops; the “Trophy earned” message verifies success, and Command becomes available on the Combat Ability selection screen.

This fight also counts toward your completion run. Repairing the Mural in the Gap requires defeating every Resonant across the regions, so clearing the Unknown Resonant ticks one more box on that checklist.
