Apple will today start rolling out the much-awaited iOS 12 update for everyone to install on their supported iPhone and iPad devices. The update will be available to download over-the-air through your iPhone’s Software Update section OR from iTunes on your computer.

Here are some easy to follow guides to update to iOS 12 directly from your iPhone OR via iTunes OR by manually downloading the iOS 12 IPSW firmware file.



How to Update to iOS 12 via OTA

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Go to General » Software Update.
  3. Let your iPhone check for available updates, and tap Download and Install when your device detects the iOS 12 update.

That simple. Installing the iOS 12 update over-the-air is the simplest method to update to iOS 12. However, if you’re unable to install iOS 12 OTA update, consider upgrading your iPhone to iOS 12 via iTunes on your computer.


How to Update to iOS 12 via iTunes

  1. Open iTunes on your Mac or Windows PC. We’re using a Windows PC for this post.
  2. Connect your iPhone/iPad to the PC using the original USB cable that came with your device.
  3. If a Trust This Computer pop-up shows on your device’ screen, make sure to click on Trust.
  4. If you’re connecting your iPhone/iPad first time with iTunes, you’ll get a “Do you want to allow this computer..” pop-up on screen, select Continue. Also, when iTunes greets you with a Welcome to Your New iPhone screen, choose Set up as new iPhone and click on the Continue button.
  5. Once your device is shown on the iTunes screen, click on the Check for Update button.
  6. Click on Download and Update button when iTunes detects the iOS 12 update.
  7. If asked, enter your passcode on your iPhone to let iTunes download and install iOS 12 on your device.

How to Update to iOS 12 manually using IPSW firmware

You can download iOS 12 IPSW firmware for your iPhone or iPad model and update your device manually using iTunes.

Download iOS 12 IPSW Firmware

Get the iOS 12 IPSW firmware file for your device from the link above and follow the instructions below to flash the firmware via iTunes.

  1. Open iTunes on your Mac or Windows PC. We’re using a Windows PC for this post.
  2. Connect your iPhone/iPad to the PC using the original USB cable that came with your device.
  3. If a Trust This Computer pop-up shows on your device’ screen, make sure to click on Trust.
  4. If you’re connecting your iPhone/iPad first time with iTunes, you’ll get a “Do you want to allow this computer..” pop-up on screen, select Continue. Also, when iTunes greets you with a Welcome to Your New iPhone screen, select Set up as new iPhone and click on the Continue button.
  5. Once your device is shown on the iTunes screen, press & hold the SHIFT key and click the Check for Update button in iTunes to select the Restore Image (IPSW) file.
    └ If you’re on Mac, press and hold the Options key and click on the Update button in iTunes.
  6. Select the Restore Image file (.ipsw) you downloaded in Step 3 above.
  7. You’ll get a prompt on PC “iTunes will update your iPhone to iOS (version)..”, hit the Update button to continue.
  8. iTunes will now start the update process by first extracting the Restore Image file. You can monitor the progress in the top bar on iTunes screen.
  9. When asked for a passcode, pick up your iPhone and enter your passcode while keeping it connected to the PC.
  10. iTunes will now update your iPhone.
  11. Once iTunes part is done, your phone will reboot and continue the installation. You’ll see the Apple logo with a progress bar on your phone’s screen.
  12. After installation is finished, your iPhone will reboot into the system, and you’ll be greeted with an Update Complete screen on the phone.
