Valheim: How the Forge of Potential and Battle Totems Work

Where the rare Mountains upgrade station spawns, which idols it eats, and what happens when a refinement fails.

The Forge of Potential is a rare, world-generated upgrade station in Valheim 1.0 that pushes weapons and armor past their normal crafting ceiling. Instead of paying metal and station levels, you feed it a Battle Totem and gamble. A success adds a quality level and better stats. A failure destroys the item outright.

Quick answer: Find the Forge of Potential in the Mountains, place a weapon or armor piece in the slot, load a Battle Totem from a chest, and hit Attempt Refinement. Success shows a message such as “Stone Axe refined successfully to level 5”; failure deletes the item and returns only part of its crafting materials.

Where the Forge of Potential spawns in Valheim

The station generates naturally in the Mountains biome. It is not a build piece, so you cannot craft it at a workbench or hammer it into your base. You have to travel and find one, which usually means combing snowy terrain until the structure appears on the landscape.

Because it is world-generated, a seed can leave you walking a long way before the first one turns up. Once you find one, mark it on your map. There is no portable version, and no way to relocate it to a home base.

Battle Totems: Where the idols drop

Refinement runs on Battle Totems, also labelled as idols in your inventory. They appear in chests across the world, and the tier of totem you get tracks the biome you are looting. Meadows chests hand out the wooden ones. The late-game biomes hold the top-tier idols.

Mid-tier idolsChests in the intermediate biomes
Flametal and Bloodgold idols (highest)Ashlands and Deep North chests

Totems come in separate weapon and armor variants, and the two are not interchangeable. A weapon totem will not refine a chest piece, and an armor totem will not refine a sword. The spawn commands confirm eight tiers of each, numbered 0 through 7.

What refinement adds to weapons and armor

Each successful refinement bumps the item’s quality level by one and raises its stats. Weapons gain roughly 5 damage per level, armor gains about 2 points of protection, and both gain durability. Crucially, the gain is applied without the usual metal cost or the station-level requirement.

That is the whole point of the station. A normal Forge upgrade demands the right bench level plus a stack of bars, and it stops at the recipe’s maximum quality. The Forge of Potential ignores both limits, which is how gear ends up at levels the standard recipe never offers.

Rare and unique gear is eligible too. The Dyrnwyn sword and the Staff of Embers both refine at the station, reaching levels well past what their recipes allow.

Failure chance and what you get back

Every attempt can fail. When it does, the item is destroyed on the spot and you are refunded only a fraction of the materials that went into crafting it. The totem is consumed either way.

Unique weapons behave slightly better on a loss. Destroying Dyrnwyn returns its rare components rather than generic bars, so you get the Dyrnwyn Hilt Fragment and the Dyrnwyn Tip Fragment back and can rebuild the sword. It is still a setback, but not a permanent loss of the item.

Note: refine spare or rebuildable gear first. Anything you cannot re-craft from materials you already hold is a bad candidate for a roll.

Gear the Forge of Potential will not accept

Two categories are locked out. Hildir’s clothing items cannot be refined, and trinkets are rejected as well. If an item cannot be improved, the station simply will not let you run the attempt on it, so there is no risk of wasting a totem on an ineligible piece.

Console commands for the Forge of Potential

On PC, Xbox and PS5 you can open the console and type devcommands to enable the developer commands. From there, the station, the totems and free refinements are all reachable by command. These were current as of Valheim 1.0.2.

CommandEffect
spawn upgradestationPlaces a Forge of Potential where you stand
forcedeleteRemoves the station you are looking at
spawn Upgrader0Weapon to Upgrader7WeaponSpawns a weapon Battle Totem of that tier
spawn Upgrader0Armor to Upgrader7ArmorSpawns an armor Battle Totem of that tier
findtp upgradestationLocates and teleports you to a station
findtp ancientupgradestationAlternative teleport target for the station
find upgradestationPings the location on your map without teleporting

Totem spawn names are typed as a single word, with no space before the tier number. Getting the capitalisation right matters less than keeping the string unbroken.

Free refinements without totems

PC players enable debugmode after devcommands, then press the B key to toggle no-cost mode. On Xbox and PS5 the process is shorter, since you type nocost directly instead of using the key toggle.

devcommands

(press B)

With no-cost active, the station stops asking for a totem and refinements run for free. Turning developer commands on affects your save the same way it does anywhere else in Valheim, so use a test world if you want your main run untouched.

The maths on this station is straightforward. Every totem you find is a chance at a permanent stat gain, priced against the possibility of losing the item you fed in. Stock up on idols from the biome tiers you are already farming, run them on gear you can rebuild, and save the top-tier Ashlands and Deep North idols for the pieces you genuinely intend to carry into the endgame.
