The Wound that Heals is a passive Amber in Valor Mortis that slowly restores your lost Health while it sits in a slot. The most direct way to pick it up early is to kill an elite two-handed Volunteer who carries a burning greatsword in the Vale of Wrath, and a second copy in the same region turns it into a stronger version.

Quick answer: Rest at the Poisoned Camp Lantern in the Vale of Wrath (Chapter V, CRIME), walk about 110 m south to the burning-sword Volunteer, and defeat him. The Amber drops straight into your inventory.

What the Wound that Heals Amber does

Open Inventory, then the Ambers tab, and the item reads “Wound that Heals” with an “Upgrade Level: 1 / 3” line and the description “Slowly regenerate lost Health over time.” Because the level reads 1 / 3, the Amber has three levels in total.

“Wound that Heals” – “Upgrade Level: 1 / 3” – “Slowly regenerate lost Health over time.”

It works on its own once placed. The same screen explains, “Ambers can significantly increase your abilities. You can equip them by interacting with the Lantern.” After the Amber sits in a slot, lost Health comes back slowly without any input from you. You can see the full set of Ambers and their effects in the list of all 29 Ambers.

Where to find the burning-sword Volunteer

In Chapter V, CRIME, make for the VALE OF WRATH. Start at the closest checkpoint, the Poisoned Camp Lantern, then take the forest trail south for about 110 m to a log cabin. The Volunteer is amid fallen soldiers on a blood-soaked stretch of ground.

You can see him before he notices you: a tall man dressed in white and blue, wielding a massive two-handed sword with a red-hot blade. He is slow to detect you, leaving time to rest, refill your Flasks, and choose your position before the fight begins. His precise location is shown on the Vale of Wrath map.

His combat values are worth knowing before you commit: 1,500 health, 900 Posture, and 7,000 Catalysts when he falls.

His fire attacks and the Burning status

His first move is a charge with the flaming sword held low, followed by an overhead sweep that cuts a broad arc through the air.

The strike inflicts Burning. A small flame icon appears along the screen’s lower edge, and your Health keeps draining after impact, even once you have moved away.

Assume every swing can hurt you. Before the heavy overhead attack, he draws the flaming blade back over one shoulder; use that tell to dodge.

How to beat him and claim the Amber

Use the Poisoned Camp Lantern to rest and refill your Health and Flasks before setting out.
Follow the forest trail south toward the log cabin, continuing until he comes into view beside the bodies.
Close in on your own terms. He only reacts at close range, so you choose when the fight begins.
Evade his charge and fiery overhead cut, then strike once each attack is over. If Burning takes hold, heal instead of trading blows while the effect is active.
Raise his Posture through attacks and parries; when it breaks, perform a Critical Attack.
Defeating him awards 7,000 Catalysts, while a “Wound that Heals” toast appears on the screen’s right side. The Amber is added to your inventory immediately, so no ground pickup is needed.

Grab the second copy to upgrade the Amber

Another copy is found in this region, inside a red chest trimmed with gold. The chest is in the cellar beneath the bird-sign cabin, the house connected to The Lost Boy side quest, near the Wolfsbane Field Lantern. In the cellar, a large copper still and a work table topped with a lamp sit alongside the chest, which rests on the dirt floor. A Saber guards the outside of the cabin, with a Grenadier on the ledge above.

Stand at the chest and hold E on the “[E] OPEN (HOLD)” prompt.

Move directly over the open chest. The “[E] TAKE” prompt only shows when you stand right on top of it.
Take it, and the “Wound that Heals” toast appears again.

Step 3: the second “Wound that Heals”.

Because you already own one, this copy upgrades the Amber instead of adding a second. The Ambers tab now reads “Wound that Heals II” with “Upgrade Level: 2 / 3” and the same description, “Slowly regenerate lost Health over time.”

Every place to get Wound that Heals

The Amber appears in four spots across the campaign, and the two Vale of Wrath sources are the ones covered above. Three upgrade levels exist in total, from 1 / 3 up to 3 / 3.

How to equip the Amber

At a Lantern, choose LEVEL UP from the menu to put Ambers into Amber Slots. Additional slots open as you level:

  • First slot: level 5
  • Second slot: level 15
  • Third slot: level 25

Once Wound that Heals is placed in an open slot, the health regeneration runs automatically. For the full walkthrough of the Lantern menu and why the earliest Lanterns cannot do this, see how to equip Ambers.
