Helicopters in WARDOGS are the fastest way to move a squad across the map, and they are also the easiest purchase to lose in the first ten seconds of a flight. The flight model separates climbing from tilting onto different keys, so a new pilot who treats the controls like a vehicle steering wheel usually ends up on the pad upside down. The sequence below covers the pilot seat, the engine, takeoff, forward flight, and a controlled landing.
Quick answer: Press F at the aircraft and choose the Pilot seat, hold Left Shift to spin the rotors up until the skids leave the ground, use W/S to tilt the nose and A/D to bank or turn, tap Left Ctrl to descend, then press I to stop the engine once you are down.
Enter the pilot seat, not a passenger seat
Walk up to the helicopter and the interaction prompt appears with F as the interact key. The prompt lists each position separately, and only the entry marked Pilot [0/1] gives you flight controls. Take a passenger slot by mistake and the aircraft will not respond to any input at all.

If you do land in the wrong slot, you do not have to get out. The seat change binds are shown on the same HUD panel as F1–F4, so you can cycle to the pilot position while the aircraft is still on the ground.

The four inputs that actually fly the aircraft
Every maneuver is a mix of four things. Understanding which one does what is the difference between correcting a drift and amplifying it.

Note: pitch and collective are linked in practice. Tilt the nose hard forward and the helicopter accelerates but also sinks, so you need a small amount of extra collective to hold altitude.
Takeoff: lift off and hold a stable hover
You know the takeoff worked when the altitude readout climbs steadily and the airframe holds a rough position without constant input. The most common failure is over-correction: a big tilt to fix a small drift, followed by a bigger tilt in the opposite direction. The fix is always to reduce input, not add more.
Forward flight, turning, and the yaw drop-off at speed
Apply a little forward pitch and the nose drops and the helicopter builds horizontal speed. Once you are moving, back the pitch off instead of holding it at full deflection, and add collective if the altitude starts bleeding away.

Turns are cleanest when you bank with roll and use only small yaw corrections to line the nose up. Trying to steer with yaw alone spins the airframe without really changing your flight path, and it wastes speed. Keep early turns wide, because a bank that looks fine in open ground becomes a rotor strike near trees, rooftops, or power lines.
Yaw authority also weakens noticeably as airspeed rises, to the point that the nose snaps back toward center rather than holding the turn. That behavior mirrors how a real tail boom weathervanes into the airflow, and it is why pilots coming from arcade shooters struggle to point armed helicopters at a target. At speed, turn with bank and use the aircraft’s momentum to carry your guns onto the target.
To stop, roll level first, then apply backward pitch well before the point where you want to be stationary. Hold altitude with collective while the speed bleeds off, and bring the nose back to level as the aircraft settles into a hover. Braking, turning, and descending at the same time is what makes low-altitude crashes unrecoverable.
Landing and shutting the engine down
If anything about the approach changes on the way in — the zone fills up, you spot an obstacle, or you take fire — add collective, climb away, and set up a fresh circuit. A go-around costs seconds. A forced landing costs the helicopter, the cash you spent on it, and everyone on board.
Flight assists and mouse control settings
Vehicle sensitivity sits in its own part of the settings menu and does not inherit your infantry number. A sensitivity tuned for flicking onto a target at 30 meters turns every hover correction into an over-correction, so set it separately and re-test with a hover drill.

Leaving the assists on is the easier way to learn, and it keeps the mouse free for looking around while you pick a landing spot. If digital key inputs feel too all-or-nothing, enable Rotary Vehicle Mouse Control instead, which lets you ask for a small amount of tilt and stop there. HOTAS hardware works in current builds across pitch, roll, yaw, and collective axes, but detection and remapping have been inconsistent between sessions, so verify each axis while parked and keep mouse and keyboard as a fallback.
Reading the helicopter HUD
The flight display sits at the bottom center of the screen and is most useful during landings, when you need to know how level you are relative to the ground.

Which helicopter to learn on
Light airframes respond fast, which cuts both ways — they answer a good input and a bad one at the same speed. Heavier transports demand that you plan braking and turns much earlier because the momentum has to go somewhere.

The practice range is free, so every crash there costs nothing. Run the same drills in order until they are dull: lift the skids and set them back down, hold a hover and release the controls, yaw a full circle, travel a short distance and stop without gaining height, then fly a full circuit and land on the pad you left from. Finish by putting it down somewhere awkward, like a slope or a rooftop, because that is what a real drop looks like. If you wreck it far from the range, press ESC and wait roughly 30 seconds to respawn.
Flares, resupply, and what brings helicopters down
V drops defensive flares against incoming missiles, and stock is finite. Ammunition and flares are bought back at a vendor, and the aircraft prompt for buying supplies appears when you are parked in the right spot with B as the purchase key.

Check fuel before committing to a distant pickup and leave enough for a go-around or an alternate landing site. The threats also change as a match runs. In the opening minutes, your own over-correction and terrain strikes account for most losses; later, a single RPG hit will typically finish a helicopter, and anti-air gets progressively heavier as the lobby earns money. Vary your approach direction rather than flying the same corridor all match, and avoid a stationary hover over open ground within launcher range.
One payout detail changes how you should fly: both landings and parachute drops pay out, so you are never obliged to touch down in a hot zone. The survival bonus tied to a delivery is worth several times the delivery itself, which means the best release point is usually short of the fight, somewhere your passengers are still alive fifteen seconds later. Pick that spot before you lift off, and you will spend far less time replacing aircraft on the Steam store page version of your budget and far more time flying the one you already own.
