Fisch: How to Complete The Deep Update and Get the Survey Device MK I

Sail north from Moosewood, board the entrance ship, and repair the Survey Device to walk the seafloor.

Sail north from Moosewood, board the entrance ship, and repair the Survey Device to walk the seafloor.

The Deep adds a hidden underwater region far north of Moosewood, along with a lost city, dozens of new fish, and gear you can only earn down there. Reaching it takes a short sail and one key item that unlocks seafloor walking. Here is exactly how to get in, activate the Deep Survey Device, and start working through the region.

Quick answer: Redeem TheDeepIsVeryDeep, equip diving gear, flippers, an oxygen tank and a Tidebreaker, sail north from Moosewood until the screen fades, board the ship marked “The Deep,” take the inactive Deep Survey Device from the NPC, dive to the city, and repair the device to get the MK I.

Redeem the code first

Before you leave Moosewood, open the settings menu and enter the promo code that shipped with the update. It is time-limited, so do this before anything else.

The code TheDeepIsVeryDeep grants 1,000 Coins, 5 Icy Fisch’n Dots, 5 Coral Pearls, 5 Cotton Candy Pieces, 5 Tropical Fruit Mix, and a Cleaned Scrap-Bot companion skin. You will know it worked when the rewards appear and the code shows as redeemed.

Gear you need before you sail

The NPC at the entrance ship checks your loadout before handing over the Survey Device. If the required items are sitting in your backpack instead of your equipment slots, he turns you away and you sail back for nothing. Equip everything first.

ItemRequiredNotes
Diving gearYesBasic works; advanced gives more oxygen
FlippersYesAny tier; better ones cut travel time
Oxygen tankYesBring the best one you own
TidebreakerYesChecked by the NPC; also doubles travel speed

A GPS unit helps you hit the exact coordinates, and a harpoon gun is worth bringing for the region’s tougher catches. Neither is checked by the entrance NPC.

How to reach The Deep from Moosewood

Spawn a boat at the Shipwright in Moosewood. A Bloop Boat is enough to make the trip.

Point the boat north into open ocean and keep sailing. If your navigation marker is missing, open the Changelog menu, select “The Deep,” and press “Guide Me” to place a marker that points along the correct heading.

Watch for a short black fade. That fade is the hidden barrier moving your boat to the other side of the map, where a ship with “The Deep” above it is waiting.
Board the ship and speak to the NPC on deck. With your flippers, oxygen tank, diving gear and Tidebreaker equipped, he hands over the Deep Survey Device in its inactive state.

Move to the anchor at the back of the ship and jump straight down. Keep descending until the white domes and palaces of the city appear below you, then enter the central district to refill your oxygen.

Activate the Deep Survey Device

The device the ship NPC gives you does nothing at first. Open your accessories and it reads as inactive. You have to repair it inside the city before it works.

Talk to the Chief Engineer on the seafloor to repair it into the Deep Survey Device MK I. Once repaired, equip it from your accessories bag rather than the hotbar. Skipping this step leaves you swimming blind through the trenches.

With MK I equipped, you stop swimming and start walking in low gravity. You can cast a rod while walking, your bobber drifts slowly upward instead of sinking, and oxygen drains far more slowly. Pairing the device with a Tidebreaker roughly doubles your travel speed across the trenches.

Explore the seafloor and take NPC quests

Once you can walk, spread out from the central district and start talking to the residents. Deep City is breathable, so you can move around its districts at a normal pace while you pick up work.

Deliver requested items back to the NPCs to claim your rewards. Several questlines share the same materials, so speak to everyone before you commit to a grind and avoid selling something you need three quests later.

Restore the sector beacons

The trenches start out hostile. Roaming fish patrol them and deal contact damage when they touch you. Chief Engineer Nereus asks you to synthesize beacon cores and repair the outer beacon towers to fix this.

Each restored tower permanently lights up its sector and reduces fish hostility there. That second effect is the real payoff, since a lit sector turns a dangerous stretch into an ordinary fishing spot. Handle the beacons before rushing the rods, or the rest of the region gets much harder than it needs to be.

Unlock the Gloomy Crevice and MK II

The Gloomy Crevice sits at the very bottom of the Outer Deep, and visibility there drops to zero. Do not enter on MK I. Upgrade the Survey Device to MK II first, which unlocks the Light Module that lets you see anything down there.

Inside you will find ruined structures, rare deep-dwelling fish found nowhere else, and the Faceless Cusks needed to start the boss hunt. Bring a strong harpoon gun, because the deeper catches hit hard.

Trigger and beat the Monstrous Cusk

This is the closest thing The Deep has to a boss fight, and it runs as a localized event. Catch Faceless Cusks in the Gloomy Crevice to awaken the Monstrous Cusk, which then starts swimming toward Deep City.

Pursue it with harpoon gear across several stages. Hit its flanks to slow it down and aim for the head for heavy damage. Defeat it before it reaches the city, and you claim its tooth, a unique material that feeds directly into the Cusk Purger rod recipe. Flank shots buy time while head shots end the fight, so high burst damage matters more than perfect accuracy here.

Unlock the Scrap-Bot companion

Complete Tinkerer Orik’s request inside Deep City to unlock Scrap-Bot as a companion. It passively retrieves materials and catches fish while you play. Unlock it early rather than late, since it farms in the background during every beacon run and bestiary session, so delaying it just wastes free materials.

New rods, harpoon guns, and spears

The update adds four rods along with several harpoon guns and a spear. You can now equip bait directly to ranged gear, a new mechanic that arrived with The Deep. The Luminous Rod is the earliest unlock, while the Cusk Purger sits at the top of the crafting ladder and needs Monstrous Cusk materials.

Harpoons and spears can be enchanted at the Keepers Altar using Enchant Relics or Cosmic Relics. Catches in The Deep can also drop raw materials, and you can install Stat Chips onto the Survey Device to boost Harpoon Gun Accuracy, Range, Resilience, and Power. Extra crafting materials sell to the Deep Merchant for additional C$.

Work through it in dependency order and the region opens up cleanly. Redeem the code, gear up, sail north, repair the Survey Device, light the beacons to make the trenches safe, then push into the Gloomy Crevice for the Monstrous Cusk and the best gear. Grab Scrap-Bot early so it farms for you the whole way through.
