How to Fish: How to Throw Dynamite Further

Charge Q, jump, and release to land dynamite in deep water, then shoot it.

Charge Q, jump, and release to land dynamite in deep water, then shoot it.

Dynamite in How to Fish drops almost at your feet if you tap the throw. Range is a charge. Hold the throw, leave the ground as you let go, and the stick can clear the beach and land in deep water.

Quick answer: Hold Q until the throw is fully charged, jump, then release Q. Shoot the stick after it lands. Dynamite does not explode on its own.

Charge dynamite distance with the Q key

On keyboard, dynamite uses Q. A short press is a drop, not a throw. The stick travels farther the longer you keep Q held, up to a fixed maximum. Release only after that charge has built if you want the longest ground toss the game will give you.

That charged release still stays fairly close if you remain planted. Use it when you only need the beach or the shallows. Deep water needs the jump on top of the hold.

Jump throw to reach deep water

The extra distance comes from combining a full Q hold with a jump. Face the water, keep the charge going, then leave the ground right before you let go. Releasing at the top of the jump is what carries the stick past the shoreline.

Equip dynamite so it is the active item. You cannot charge a throw while another tool is selected.
Press and hold Q. Keep the key down until the throw has charged to its maximum. A quick tap here is what causes the short drop.
Jump while Q is still held. Time the jump for the end of the charge, not the start.
Release Q during the jump to send the dynamite out. If it still lands on the sand, hold longer on the next attempt and jump a little later.

You know the throw worked when the stick settles in deep water instead of on the beach. A short landing means the charge was cut off or the jump was skipped.

Dynamite shop price and equipping

Dynamite is a shop item, not a world pickup. Buy it from a beachside counter for $25, then equip it before you try the charge. Interact with the shop the same way you buy any other stock. After the purchase, select dynamite so Q applies to the stick and not to some other object.

One stick is enough to test the jump throw. Buy another if the first one detonates on the sand or sinks too close to shore to be useful.

Detonate dynamite with gunfire

A thrown stick sits there until you shoot it. Swap to a firearm, aim at the dynamite, and fire. A shotgun is enough when the stick is still on the sand. The same rule applies after a long throw. The explosion is triggered by the bullet, not by the landing.

When the stick is underwater, aim a gun at that spot and shoot again. An SMG works for this. A correct blast shows an Explosion notice and can kill several fish at once, including Cod, Salmon, and Mackerel. Bodies then float where you can collect them.

What you seeWhat it means
Stick on the sand or at your feetQ was released too soon, or you never jumped
Stick in deep water, no blastThe throw worked. You still need to shoot it
Explosion, then several fish killedThe charge, jump, and gunshot all landed

If nothing dies, the stick never exploded or it never reached the school. Charge longer, jump on the release, and fire at the dynamite itself rather than at the fish.

Once a charged jump can park dynamite past the surf, one $25 stick can clear a cluster that would take several ordinary catches. Hold Q, jump, release, then shoot.
