GTA 6: How to Hold Hands as Jason and Lucia

Hand-holding is one of the small couple interactions built into Grand Theft Auto 6, and it works the same way most of the game’s contextual prompts do. When Jason and Lucia are out walking side by side, a prompt slides into view and stays there until the moment passes.

Quick answer: While Jason and Lucia are walking together, wait for the R2 = HOLD HANDS prompt to appear on screen, then press R2. The two link hands and keep walking as a couple until you break away.

When the hold hands prompt appears

The prompt is contextual, not a menu option. It shows up during calm moments when both characters are on foot and moving together at a normal pace, which is exactly how it plays out as the pair walk into the Effluvia rooftop lounge. There is no button combination to force it and no unlock to chase.

Confirmation is immediate. The two characters reach for each other, the animation blends into their walk cycle, and they continue moving as a linked pair rather than as a player and a trailing companion. If nothing changes on screen, the prompt was not active when you pressed the trigger.

Companion controls for Jason and Lucia

Holding hands sits inside a small set of partner inputs that appear while the two are together. They share the same on-screen prompt space in the corner of the display, so only the ones that apply to your current situation will be listed.

InputWhat it does
R2Hold hands while the two walk together
L2Focus on your partner and address them
CircleHurry — urges your partner to move along

Doors work on the same principle. Jason and Lucia can hold them open for one another when the game offers the prompt, which is another optional gesture rather than a scripted beat.

Why the R2 prompt is not showing up

The interaction is tied to a specific state, so the usual reason for a missing prompt is that the game does not consider the pair to be quietly walking together. Split the characters up and send one across the city on their own, and the option disappears until they are back in step.

  • You are playing as one character while the other is off doing their own thing.
  • You are in a vehicle rather than on foot together.
  • The moment is not a calm one — the prompt belongs to relaxed co-walking, not action.

Note: R2 is the trigger only when the hold hands prompt is visible. Outside of that window the input does what it normally does in whatever context you are in.

What holding hands does to the relationship system

Rockstar tracks the bond between Jason and Lucia separately from the criminal profile that measures what kind of player you are. The relationship grows through time spent together, whether that is kayaking, playing pool, shopping, or robbing a store as a pair. Ignoring your partner’s texts pulls in the other direction.

You manage the relationship in the way you hopefully nurture any relationship — which is by spending time together.

That framing matters for expectations. There is no stat boost, discount, or unlock attached to being an affectionate couple, and you cannot deliberately break them up by refusing to engage. The two stay partners in crime either way, and the payoff is in how their story lands rather than in anything mechanical.

Hand-holding also sits alongside a much wider set of ambient couple moments. Jason and Lucia share an apartment and their own daily routines, get dressed, raid the fridge, and talk to each other in the car, all without a cutscene taking over.

Everything described here comes from pre-release footage captured on PS5, so button prompts and labels could shift before the game arrives on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The core idea is unlikely to change, though: keep the two walking together, watch the corner of the screen, and tap R2 when the prompt shows up.
