Anime Expeditions: How to Get and Evolve Head Captain and Rainman

Summer Capsule pulls, the exact evolution materials, and what each evolved unit does on the field.

Update 2.0 dropped nine new units into Anime Expeditions on August 31, 2026, and two of them are locked behind the Tidal Siege summer event: Head Captain and Rainman. Both come out of Summer Capsules, both need event-only materials to evolve, and both turn into very different tower types once you push them into their second forms.

Quick answer: Farm Sand Dollars in Tidal Siege, buy Summer Capsules from the event shop at 100 Sand Dollars each (or 1,000 for ten), open them to pull Head Captain and Rainman, level each unit to 50, then use the Evolve portal with 25,000 Gold plus the listed materials to get Head Captain (Char) and Rainman (Forecast).

Sand Dollars and Summer Capsules: what you need first

Sand Dollars are the Tidal Siege currency, and you earn them by clearing waves in the event mode. That currency does double duty here, because it buys both the capsules that contain the units and the evolution items those units need later. Budget accordingly before you start spamming pulls.

Capsules also contain limited skins alongside the units, so a bulk buy is rarely wasted. Rates are visible while you open, and the auto-sell settings added in Update 2.0 let you dump duplicates without clicking through every result.

How to pull Head Captain and Rainman

Open the Tidal Siege event shop from the lobby. This is the same panel that sells the evolution materials, so it is worth learning where it sits before you start spending.
Buy Summer Capsules with your Sand Dollars. Bulk purchases are the practical choice, since both units share the same capsule pool and you may need several batches.
Head to your inventory and open the capsules there. Head Captain and Rainman both come out of this pool, and each pull lands in your unit list immediately.
Level both units to 50. The Evolve portal will not accept them below that, no matter how many materials you are holding.

Evolution materials for Head Captain (Char) and Rainman (Forecast)

The two evolutions overlap on one item. Both need a Cloud Disc, which means a single disc will not cover both units — buy two from the event shop if you plan to evolve the pair. The Overgrown Beard is Head Captain’s exclusive requirement and also comes from the Tidal Siege shop.

EvolutionRequirements
Head Captain (Char)1 Overgrown Beard, 1 Cloud Disc, 2 Fire Magic Orbs, 2 Physical Magic Orbs, 25,000 Gold
Rainman (Forecast)1 Cloud Disc, 2 Water Magic Orbs, 2 Wind Magic Orbs, 25,000 Gold

You can confirm the exact list at any time in the Evolve menu, which shows a checklist against what you currently hold. Once every line is satisfied, walk to the Evolve portal in the hub and run the evolution there.

You will know it worked when the unit’s name in your roster changes to Head Captain (Char) or Rainman (Forecast), and the new passive list appears on its card. If the portal refuses, it is almost always one of two things: the unit is under level 50, or you are short on the shared Cloud Disc.

Head Captain (Char) passives and burn mechanic

Head Captain (Char) is a burn unit built around stacking, not bursting. Its damage applies burn stacks with no ceiling, so the longer a target survives inside its range, the harder the damage-over-time hits. The second half of the kit is a takedown payoff: enemies killed by the unit leave behind explosive Skeletons that sit on the path as traps for whatever walks in next.

Its abilities are named by compass direction, with three passives labelled East, West and South, plus an active called North. The Fiery Staff equipment is the natural pairing here, since it feeds directly into the fire side of the kit.

Rainman (Forecast) passives and the Climate Meter

Rainman (Forecast) works on a charge cycle rather than constant output. Its Rain Cloud ability drops clouds that fill a Climate Meter, and when that meter completes, it triggers Frog Storm. The storm freezes enemies in place and spawns Poison Frog path traps, which handles crowd control and chip damage at the same time.

The supporting passives are Heavy Rain, Frog Storm and Poison Frog, with Rain Cloud as the active. Equipping the Poison Frog item leans into the trap half of the kit.

Testing both units in sandbox before a real run

Sandbox mode is the cheapest way to see upgrade-by-upgrade stats and animations without burning a wave clear. Place the evolved unit, walk it through its upgrade path, and watch how the burn stacks or Climate Meter behave against a moving line of enemies.

Confirm the Start Game prompt to load in. From there you can compare base damage against the Unbound values, which is the trait most players are chasing on both units.

Where to get Trait Crystals for Unbound rerolls

Unbound is rolled through the trait reroll menu, and rerolls run on Trait Crystals. There is no shortcut to guarantee it, so the practical approach is stockpiling crystals from every recurring source before you start rolling on either unit.

  • Regular Challenges, which pay out roughly every 20 minutes, plus 20 crystals from Daily and 50 from Weekly Challenges
  • The Gold Shop and Event Shop via the Ramen Guy NPC in the lobby
  • Battlepass tiers, including the free track
  • The Shiny Normalizer station, which returns 15 crystals per normalized duplicate shiny
  • The Expedition Shop, purchasable with Expedition Coins
  • Redeemable codes entered from the in-game menu

Note: Update 2.0 also added a second trait slot with trait swapping, so a good roll is less disposable than it used to be.

Both units are tied to Tidal Siege, which means the capsules, the Cloud Disc and the Overgrown Beard all disappear when the event does. If you want the evolved forms rather than the base pulls, buy the materials while you are still farming Sand Dollars — pulling the unit is the easy half, and the shop items are the part you cannot back-fill later.
